It's not the job of a newspaper, no, but it is not the job of a newspaper to slobber all over schools and coaches 100+ miles away, either. Yet... that's what they do in Birmingham.

Years ago, I knew someone who was an SID at a small D-I school in a major market. Nothing pissed him off worse than seeing local daily giving more coverage to State U 100 miles down the road, instead of his school right in town.

Yes, State U was 10 times larger. It was also 100 miles away in another town that had its own paper that covered them everytime someone sneezed. So, I see both points of view. He was a hard-working guy whose job involved getting publicity for his school. And he worked hard at it.

If the Birmingham News had depended on UAB fans to drive circulation, they'd have shut down 20 years ago.

UAB will never have the same interest of Bama or Auburn, but a hell of a lot more than West Alabama, Samford, et al. And unlike Dallas, Chicago and the like, there are no major pro sports for the News to chase down. College sports is the franchise.

Because it's the only paper in the state that does so...

Alabama and Auburn are the primary players and everyone else has a supporting role when it comes to D-1A in the state. No denying that. Troy draws well and South Alabama is just getting started, but could be decent in terms of fan support. UAB barely has any fans in a relic of a stadium in one of the state's worst neighborhoods. Until they build an on-campus facility, they aren't going to draw many fans and certainly won't draw any away from UA/AU.

How much coverage does the Clarion-Ledger and Jackson TV and radio give Ole Miss and Mississippi State vs. what they give Jackson State?

Actually, the coverage is pretty even. Of course the team that's having the better season gets more, but for the most part, the coverage is balanced.

It isn't. Therein lies the problem. Everybody in the state slobbers on AU/UA's knob all year long. Nobody wants to piss off Saban and Chizik is so fucking nice, it's disgusting. It's like every paper in the state is a PR firm for these two screwballs.

The same can be said in any state. So what is your point?
