Auburn AD Jay Jacobs just went on TV and said they didn't fire Tuberville, he quit. But apparently they have decided to continue to pay him regardless. So my question: Is Jacobs

A) making the stupidest decision an AD has ever made by continuing to pay Tubs after he quits,

B) lying through his teeth, or

C) totally clueless as to what really happened and just saying what someone told him to say?

I think Jacobs knows this was Lowder's decision, and he doesn't want anyone to think he should get blame.

And now the coaches' wives get into the mix ...

Tommy Tuberville "resigned" yesterday as the head coach at Auburn University. Unfortunately, no one bothered to tell his assistants, who were out on the road recruiting, completely unaware that they no longer had jobs. As you can imagine, their families are not too happy about that, so a couple of assistant's wives did what anyone would do in that situation—call a sports talk radio show.

Donna Dunn, wife of d-line coach Don Dunn (Don and Donna Dunn?), called the local sports talk station to complain that her husband found out he had lost his job when the coach of a recruit he was visiting told him. Her son, who is a student at Auburn, found out when a classmate interrupted a presentation he was giving to tell him his dad was unemployed. All of the other coaches and their families found out from media reports or friends.

Amy Enzminger, wife of offensive coordinator Steve, said her hubby found out while he was on a recruiting visit in Maryland. She also called up to rip the administration for their handling of the situation.

Other than "ag," which means you get to eat because farmers know how to grow food better, Auburn is known primarily for its engineering college and for varied liberal arts.

Chris Morris is not the most famous basketball player, either. Barkley still claims that title and Chuck Person probably needs to be in consideration.

If Barkley doesn't make a serious run in politics, I'd love to see him be the basketball coach at Auburn.

It would be a stunt ... but seriously, it's Auburn basketball. Who gives a shit?

It would be hilarious, if they could convince his citi-fied ass to move back to the Plains.

Barkley would be good at that if he hired quality assistants who actually could coach, and he could be the 'face' of the team.

They would sell a shitload of tickets in the new arena.

With the exception of West Point, I think Auburn can claim more general officers than any other school.

Nationally recognized ROTC programs are available in three branches of service: Air Force, Army, and Navy/Marine Corps, the latter being the only one of its kind in Alabama. Each of these three ROTC units is ranked among the top ten in the nation. Over 100 officers that attended Auburn have reached flag rank (general or admiral), including one, Carl Epting Mundy Jr., who served as Commandant of the US Marine Corps. Auburn is one of only seven universities in the Nuclear Enlisted Commissioning Program, and has historically been one of the top ROTC producers of Navy nuclear submarine officers.

In addition to the many outstanding ROTC graduates commissioned through Auburn, two masters degree alumni from Auburn, four-star generals Hugh Shelton and Richard Myers, served as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff in the last decade. Both officers received their commissions elsewhere, and attended Auburn for an M.S. (Shelton) and M.B.A. (Myers).

Auburn has graduated six astronauts (including T.K. Mattingly of Apollo 13 fame) and one current and one former director of the Kennedy Space Center. 1972 Auburn Aerospace Engineering graduate Jim Kennedy, currently director of NASA's Kennedy Space Center, was previously deputy director of NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC). Several hundred Auburn graduates, primarily engineers and scientists, currently work directly for NASA or NASA contractors. Hundreds of Auburn engineers worked for NASA at MSFC during the peak years of the "space race" in the 1960s, when the Saturn and Apollo moon programs were in full development.

If I'm Mike Leach, and I have a choice between leaving Texas Tech for Auburn or Washington, I don't even consider that a choice. Auburn is now the laughingstock of college football, and anyone would be crazy to take the job. Of course, someone will.
