True, but those taking the Tribune buyouts are getting two weeks per year working there and that's pretty standard. Hell, a few I know who were let go by Gannett got two weeks per year. When Gannett's severance is twice Media General's what does that say?

Having a two-tier system for severance just begs the assholes to dump those cheaper to dump. If Scott had 10 or 11 years in, maybe a different outcome. And it is insane that such a decision might come down to that. These people are lousier business folks than we've given them credit for, if that's where they see an opportunity to save money.

Makes that 10th year a real bonus year, worth an extra 10 weeks of pay. Guess that will get spun as an alternative to an actual raise, at some point. "See, by not laying you off this year, you'll be able to double your severance when we lay you off next year!"

I have digested this thread since it began, checking every couple of hours for new comments.
Saturday night I was at work and I saw a story folder in the story list slugged ACC.xxxxx
That means somebody grabbed it off the wire for future use, using the xxxxx in place of the actual date.
So I opened the story to see what it was and it was written by Scott Carter.
    Kinda freaked me out.
Scott, what happened to you shouldn't have happened. All the best to you.

    SoCalDude,

Any chance that story can see the light of day here, so those unfamiliar with Scott's work can get a sense of just what a loss this is to the Trib?

Or they could google news "Scott Carter" and "Seminoles"

Thanks Mizzou, I just wasn't sure since SoCal mentioned it had been earmarked for a future date whether or not the story had run yet.

The level of self-absorption necessary for someone to have a Twitter page like the ones I've seen through links on this thread is simply astounding.

    Thank you, buckweaver.

I've been holding off on saying this all day.

I'm so glad that Scott Carter came on here, and we can only hope he will take from this board some of the support that he will really need in the days/weeks to come.

Sure, he sounds upbeat now. But, keep mind that he was writing on a public message board, on a potentially explosive situation for him, and therefore had to be being more thoughtful/careful than he might be if we were talking to him in person.

And also, let's face it. It has only been a couple of days. I guarantee you that the impact of the situation hasn't really even hit him yet.

In fact, for a couple weeks, he's liable to just enjoy the time off and the chance to catch a breath.

It's after that, when the harsh, unchangeable reality of the situation -- and the anger and upset and the absurdity, injustice and just plain wrongness of it -- will really kick in.

If he's not working again, in a job he actually wants and isn't just settling for or being forced into, he might not be quite as upbeat anymore.

Like Jessica DaSilva, Scott Carter has simply put a name and a face on a bad situation.

But his isn't the only one -- not by a long shot. Unfortunately.

Poynter actually did a thing about using Twitter to report, which was kind of interesting. It got me to start a page just out of curiosity.

That was pretty much it for me, though..

Well put Write. And lo and behold, Ms. DaSilva has read the WSJ article and is planning an entirely separate post to address that. Don't know why it needs a separate post, as I told her, since the article proves that Miss Coats' "plan" is anything but original, but I am anxious to see her spin.

Don't pick on the intern; thanks to her reporting we have a pretty good sense of what happened in the newsroom and why. She swallowed the management line; she's young and idealistic. But at least reported the basics rather than doing what so many bloggers do: One sentence on the root issue and 5000 words on the opinion.
Scott Carter is a great person; he's handling this crummy screw job as well as anyone could be expected to. I hope he finds a great job with a better company.

Some of us are not picking on the intern, just trying to enlighten her a bit so that she can be better informed the next time she chooses to blog.
