Thanks Mizzou, and thanks for giving me an excuse to reach the 50 mark in posts. Yeah, this thread obviously hits real close to home for me, and being this is the slow time for work, unfortunately I have a lot of free time on my hands. That'll change when NFL training camps open up here in a few weeks.

And yet another know-it-all Jessica supporter rushing to judgment:

    Sheila Scarborough

Jessica, hang in there, and thanks for circling back and posting a follow-up. You’re not perfect, but certainly neither are some of the folks who are commenting, and most importantly you’re learning how to navigate as a modern journalist.

It’s interesting to note which comment authors appear to have a blog of their own, and which do not.

I would love to know how many of these journalists know how to blog, how to shoot video and upload it to YouTube, how to interact on Twitter, how to shoot photos and upload to Flickr, how to conduct an interview using a cell phone and then upload it to Utterz, how many have a LinkedIn profile or a Facebook page….

Does any of that matter, you say? Only if you want to be competent in the tools of current and future journalism.

Yes, clearly, good investigative reporting and fact-checking and followup and clean copy delivered on time, spell-checked, yes, yes, yes.

    It ain’t enough anymore.

At least this person is working to figure out the new stuff, on top of trying to figure out the bedrock stuff.

What have YOU done lately, journalist reader, to enhance your professional expertise, your professional tool bag, your skill set?

    Nice diversion tactic, eh?

If that was all it took to keep one's job, you'd see a shitload of journos in video-production classes tomorrow. And Twitter-ing all day, whatever the f*ck that is.

I have most of those things. That doesn't mean I won't get laid off tomorrow.

Um, I have some of that and can do most of that. Now since she's such an expert, maybe she can explain how that will translate into revenue for newspapers so us lowly reporters can actually earn a paycheck.

If Twitter is the future of journalism then just fire the whole lot of us and hire a bunch of 13 year old girls. Seriously, citing using Twitter in an argument about journalism is the dumbest fucking shit you could possibly do.

But good news, I just friended Alex Rodriguez on Facebook so no need to interview him after the game!

I don't agree with much of anything she's written, but "young lady" is certainly condescending, if not sexist. You can't really equate "lady" to "man" ... not sure there's a male equivalent as far as condescending terms in any professional context.

Facebook reporting. Ai yi yi yi yi.

My paper did a hell of a job on the Virginia Tech stuff. Won awards. I was proud to have a hand in it.
But our one glitch was a doozy. One of the victims from here shared a name with another student there. Also from here. Neighboring high schools.
We ran the wrong kid's picture the next day.
    A picture taken off Facebook.

Condescending, perhaps, but not sexist. But when she calls herself, ''the lovely and talented,'' young lady is simply keeping with the tone she created.
