When people and institutions no longer are willing or able to communicate with the language tools they've known for years, they make up a new language -- kind of like hitting the re-set button -- and start over. That way, you don't have to feel bad when you get to the core of something and realize, "Shit, I don't know the answer to that. Let me see if I can great-Googly-Moogly look it up before I go all aTwitter."

But oh, what's this? Cool site! Hang on ...

Society's like that. We keep inventing new ways to communicate -- so many so fast that we can't keep up -- and it just delays the real problem, which is our inability to talk with and understand each other.

I hip to the now and down with SJ - does that count?

Seriously, the network I built on SJ helped me as a reporter as much as just about anything else.

SportsJournalists.com is an incredible resource and (I sorta hate this word) network. Yes.

Why you hate 'and?' What it ever do to you? It is perfectly fine word.

Indeed it is. And at least the word network has existed for generations, unlike Twitter and Tweets. ;)

I just laughed out loud at both of those posts. I needed that.

This is far and away the most depressing thread I have ever read on this site.

You know? I think we've met this generation's Melinda Gorham. Twenty years from now, she'll be an editor more concerned about style over substance...

The networking value of this web site is extensive, and I've been able to cash in on it lately (thanks, Birdscribe), as it has made me some freelance money to supplement the income. It's money I wouldn't have made without Birdscribe, plain and simple. And he knows he's due a beer or two the next time he's in my neck of the woods.

Hopefully, there's someone who can help Scott network through here to help get him back on his feet. That would be something to really be hip to the now and down about -- whatever the hell that means.

    All the best, Scott.

It's been double-barrelled depressing. Not only have we found out that people have lost their jobs, but that there is a clueless intern who is practically cheerleading about it.

On the bright side, we've been blessed with a classy post from Scott Carter. So it hasn't been all bad.
