Calling this guy an idiot won't solve anything, but damn it... really? I mean, really? You stayed up until 1 a.m. for that huge Tony Gonzales feature to be posted, then read it all before going to bed so that when you woke up and saw the print edition of the newspaper you had already read it?

Read Posnanski's column and Whitlock's thoughts, all at 1 a.m.?

    Because I doubt that.

Maybe you read the Royals gamer or the KU game update, but I doubt you read anything else, and if you're getting the Sunday Star, there (used to be, anyway) a whole lot "else".

A lot of people, myself included, are still awake at midnight when things get posted to the site. So yes, I usually read "tomorrow's news" before going to bed.

    Edit: It's Gonzalez :)

Who says the guy reads it at 1 a.m.? Maybe he reads it online when he wakes up, and he sees the print edition later. Maybe I'm just not the right kind of cranky today to see the need to bitch-slap him.

I usually read the "morning" paper after the kids go to bed, so I fall into that category as well. That's why I was a p.m. paper subscriber ... until it was killed off.

I had heard last week that Pedley feared this was coming down the pike. My response to that news bulletin was the same as when I finally saw this list today..."Damn."

Pedley is everything that people on here and Poz have said. And more. He wasn't the first racing writer most people in the country woke up to read, in all likelihood, but he should have been top 3. A great guy who was nicer to me than he ever needed to be. I already missed seeing him since I left the beat, but now I just feel like the racing community in general, and the Star's readers, have been screwed out of a chance to learn from Pedley. Just a great, great, funny guy.

Quite simply, Pedley is just one of the nicest people in the world and was very good to me when I was nothing but a punk kid.

I wonder how The Star is covering/staffing the NCAA games in town. You'd think they were plan on having Boyce there until earlier this week. I also wonder how they will spread the columnists between Mizzou, kU and the local games.

I'm guessing Boyce is at a level where he could wind up at ESPN or Sportsline, but those places are facing cuts too...

Earlier this week Posnanski said he was preparing to go to Boyz-E. I bet Big Sexy is in Minnesota and Blair in KC.

  11. Having known Kent since the days he was in Wichita and I was with UPI in Kansas City, and having met David through his work on the Royals beat in recent years, I can attest to the statements of the quality of the individuals. Here's hoping they both land on their feet. It is hard to see what is unfolding in such a short time frame to the business. So much damage being done to so many lives. And no telling what the long-term impact will be on the general public as the sources of information struggle to be redefined.

Just posting to throw my opinion in that that was a terrific blog by Posnanski. I met Mechelle Voepel once when we were the only two people covering a women's basketball game on a Sunday with incredibly crappy weather. She's incredibly nice and knows her stuff.

She still writes for ESPN on women's sports, correct? It'd be a shame if she was out on the streets as well.
