Slow news day. This is no big deal at all... I love how ESPN showed "other examples of bad behavior" by coaches when two football coaches smacked kids in the helmet or grabbed a facemask... Most of us had that happen daily at high school football practice... Get a grip ESPN...
Gee, that's a real testament to personal responsibility. A 60+ man with a history of public sociopathy isn't to blame because a teenager came to him in order to play basketball. When does Knight get to be disciplined in his behavior? When does he take responsibility for his actions? And if you were spanked, you were beaten. I'm sorry if the distinction is important to you, but there it is.
Interesting attitude. Also interesting disinclination to answer why Knight never has to behave like a rational human being. Back to the topic at hand. If Knight got caught paying a kid out of his own pocket, I would argue for leniency because he has no recorded history of that kind of thing. If a couple of players didn't graduate, I wouldn't lump him with, say, HuggyBear because Knight's record on that score has been pretty damn good. In other words, history matters. Which is why Knight simply cannot put his hands on his players any more. Not because other coahces do, but because his history says that it will escalate into something ugly and untoward. He lost his right to do that with impunity about five incidents ago. It's his fault, nobody else's, and it's certainly not the fault of his players.
This just in: ESPN's crew of basketball analysts are declaring this is a nonissue and a nonstory — for the 18th consecutive hour. Tune throughout the night for more coverage.
This is what people are arguing about? I don't have any special affection for Knight, but this? Gimme a freakin' break.
Fenian, You make a good point, but here's my counter. Texas Tech hired this guy knowing full well about his background and tendencies. Many wanted him to be retained in Indiana, but Myles Brand fired him. Knight didn't meet IU's standards. That was his call and his right. He was hired at Texas Tech with his history well documented, which to me translates tacit acceptance of his behavior (which is often reprehensible, but just as often defensible under certain community standards) by the prez, AD, whoever the heck hired him. Kids know, or should reasonably be expected to know, exactly what they're getting into when they sign up to play for Knight, just like kids who sign up for the Army know, or at least have means to know, what they're about to get into. Would I send my kid off to play for him? No. Would I object to anyone who would send his kid to play for Knight? Absolutely not.
Well, as much as I think Knight is a dickhead of the first order, Point has a point. Don't agree with it but I see where he's coming from. Point's point (geez, this is tough) notwithstanding, no kid should ever be subjected to Knight type bullying.
I'll take this one step further. I once heard a woman yelling at her 2-year-old to "shut the fuck up" and I came very, very close to reporting her to the authorities. And I will tell you this: For one day, I would give anything to be in the body of one of Knight's players. He swears at me, he lays one finger on me and his ass would be out cold, on the floor faster than you could say "Your scholarship is revoked." I'd have to look forward to a long career as a rag picker behind a supermarket, but I think it would be worth it.
