That's what they said on NBC News. So it wouldn't be 21 years-times-the number dead, it would just be 21 years?? That's amazing.

Technically 21 years is the strictest sentence. The law has provisions for those deemed a danger to society though. Basically he'll be held indefinitely with their version of parole hearings every few years after his sentence is up.

Is it too late to ask those embroiled in a political/personal pissing match to get the thread back on track or get a room? :'(

I must admit, I have a hard time fathoming how one person with a gun could kill so many people before he's stopped.

    He plagiarized the Unabomber's manifesto:

    Weird.

Isn't this exactly what the Charles Pierce article is about? Fragmenting? Painting every case of right-wing extremism/terrorism as the work of a lunatic acting alone, rather than looking at the larger issue — that there's a trend here?

    Yep.

And right-wing Christian violence is an alarming trend.

This trend has been in place for a long, long time. Just in the U.S., go back to Shay's Rebellion. ... Follow it through to the assassination of Lincoln, and all the violent unrest in between. The assassination of Garfield. And then McKinley, killed by a disaffected anarchist. In fact, look at the wave of bombings and other terrorist acts from the 1890s through the early part of the century, mostly performed by anarchists--and how freaked out everyone was, kind of like we are by Islamo-terrorists. Follow that all the way through to the Weather Underground and similar terrorist groups in the 1960s and 1970s. Take it through to Timothy McVeigh. And Osama Bin Laden. And now some fuckwad Norwegian.

I think the trend is really the history of humans.
