The only reason would be if Martinez didn't do it long enough.

Both should be locks, especially The Big Hurt. That nickname alone is worthy of admission to the hall.

He played 18 years. He won two batting titles. Once led the league in RBI. A career .312 hitter. He played 591 of his 1,412 games in the field. Of that total, 563 games were played at third base where he made only 78 errors.

There is a considerable gap between Frank Thomas and Edgar Martinez. Thomas hit 521 home runs. Martinez hit 309. Thomas won two MVP awards. Martinez has none. Martinez did finish with a higher career batting average (.312 to .301), but Thomas had the higher on-base percentage (.419 to .418) and slugging percentage (.555-515). You can argue that Martinez was a better defender when he actually played the field, but Thomas did it more often, playing first base in 971 games.

Both belong in Cooperstown without too much debate IMO.

Thomas played 971 at first base and 1311 as DH

Just fixing youor number that said Edgar played 591 of his 1412 games in the field.
I think Thomas should definitely be in the Hall; Edgar probably

... That Blyleven should be in the Hall of Fame.

I don't see Frank Thomas as even a question. Two MVPs and stellar numbers across the board. Great eye mixed with power. No-brainer.

I might be missing something here. I posted those identical numbers.

This is the time in the program where I say that Bagwell is a no-brainer too, while McGriff stays out. I'm surprised that the Thomas/Bagwell detractors aren't here yet.

    591 out of 1412 isn't the same as "591 *and* 1412"
