Schilling, Protector of the Game, has arrived. Thanks be.

Schilling still needs to apologize for telling Americans to vote for Bush before I give him credit for anything.

Sarcasm. I loathe the son of a biscuit.

Oh, trust me, I got it. Just my first response when I hear Schilling's name.

Fat fuck is fiftyfold worse than Bonds in my mind. I'd rather Bonds break the Japanese guy's home run record than ever read about something Mother Hubbard said ever again.

    How so, exactly?

I mean this respectfully, dude, with (I presume) a brotherly love for beer, baseball, Star Wars and everything else that is good on this godforsaken mudball called Earth, but I ain't getting back on that Merry Go Round with you.

The man is a hoo-ah. Period.

What merry go round? I'm actually curious. I'm a Clemens fanboy, but I'm not about to pretend he's not loathable under the right circumstances. I just don't understand how Bonds isn't in that same universe...

Do you think Schilling has legitimate Hall of Fame credentials? Where do these stunts come from and where are they pointed? Who the fuck is Curt Schilling to say he won't give Bonds anything to hit?

I saw Bonds and Clemens play in several different stadiums in the late '80s and '90s, and there was never a seething, palpable sense of hatred for either like there is now. I saw Clemens pitch against Ryan in 1990 and there was a sense that you were seeing something truly special, something you could always remember, and you wanted both guys to deliver.

Of course, things change. It will never happen, because there's no call for it, but it would be interesting to see "popularity polls," popular as those have become, for those three players. People can hate Bonds all they want, but he never wanted to be loved. I don't think you can say that about Schilling.

I kinda blew it here, assumed you were talking about Clemens instead of Schilling. But I still think that not putting Bonds in this group because "he never wanted to be loved" is a little ridiculous. The disregard he's shown for the game and the people who watch it (not to mention his teammates from time to time) absolutely puts him in the same class.

Clemens has become very easy to dislike (I'm trying very hard not to use that other word), but even his haters have to admit that he's been one of the guys that makes baseball worth following. I watched a DVD of Game 6 a few weeks ago, I can't hate on that kid. The greedy cyborg he is now, well . . .
