    Chapter 5

My client stopped by the office for an update. I had nothing to tell her, so I was extremely rude and made condescending, smart ass remarks. But she had the kind of legs I like -- feet on one end, and...
    "Sleep with me," she said.
I glanced out the window at the college kids walking along the river. I could see Hawk approaching the building carrying a Chianti and a Judy Garland record, his head like a glistening black pearl in the sun.
    "Sorry," I said.

    Chapter 6

Hawk entered, humming a little Judy. He poured some wine. He nodded in the direction of the door through which my client had just exited.
    Doing that, he asked?
    No, I told him.
    "I will," he said.

Good work, boys. Better than any Spenser book I've read in ages. Keep it up!

Thanks. We probably ought to move it to another thread, though, in case anyone checks this one for, you know, actual book suggestions.

Besides, we've already exceeded the length of the typical Spenser book these days.

    Well, almost. We didn't close.

Susan lay with her head on my chest, murmuring and mumbling after another session of lovemaking with my manly self. I lay there, Pearl by my side as well, and thought, "I can't believe how much money I make off this shit."

Gang Leader for a Day. Very good read about a sociologist that befriends a Chicago gang leader and studies how gangs and other "community leaders" affiliated with them both help and hurt poor people.

Some great stuff on both hardball teams. The powers that be were more sports-oriented than the New Yorker was or ever will be. But if there's any Black Hawks stuff in there, I haven't come upon it, yet.

Reading "The Billionaire's Vinegar" about a con artist peddling fake bottles of very old and rare French wine, including those which he claimed belonged to Thomas Jefferson. A pretty interesting and fun little read.

I thought that would be a fun read, but I had trouble getting into it--but maybe it was just because I'm not really a wine kind of guy.

I just read this based on your post. It was a really fun book. Fast-paced, funny and a little different. Bazell has a great imagination.

I'm a wine guy, and as I read more, one of the issues which is dizzying is that there are so many vintages and wines which are thrown at you. The author tried to simplyify a bit, but it is still really confusing.
