Oooo, I so want to pick up that Mantle bio. That's on my list.

Surprised you disliked it that much, Moddy. It's far from his best, but "Nature Girl" was so awful that I thought this one looked good in comparison.

They've all become the same story. His later work is no match for his earlier work. Basket Case, which is about eight years old now, is the best fo his newer books.

Though you may be right about Star Island compared to Nature Girl.

Totally agreed there. The more recent stuff isn't in the same league as his early novels.

Started The Stand. It's the first King book I've read, but starting it at the beginning of flu season wasn't the best idea ...

My second favourite King book! I hope you enjoy it.

I've never read a Stephen King book. I think I'd get nightmares.

I am struggling to get through "The Great Typo Hunt," a true story about a couple of guys who drove around the country looking for mistakes on signs... and supposedly correcting them. There haven't been nearly enough fix-ups for my liking thus far, mainly because they're asking permission rather than just whipping out the Sharpies and wrecking private property!

Looked at my previous post on "Freedom" more than two weeks ago ... still haven't finished it. OK, work is kicking my butt, but I can't believe it's taking me this long.

    Sirs, Madames,

Going to do some lesser recent Roth stuff. (By lesser I mean less than American Pastoral, Sabbath's Theater and Human Stain.) One hundred pages into The Plot Against America and it's more entertaining than I anticipated. Unfortunately I will have to take a day or three off to pour into Being and Nothingness for helping out the younger daughter of the FOTF with her second-year existentialism essay.

    YHS, etc

"The Shining" is probably my favourite but I love "Salems Lot" as well.

I enjoyed "Freedom" very much. When I read Franzen, I feel I really know the characters. Whether I like them or not, their actions always make sense, if you know what I mean.
