"Bringing the Heat." Awesome book, parts where the writing is unfuckingtouchable.

    Col. Beauregard,

Re Bowden's Heat, his opening chapter is the model of the sports book -- it puts you so deep inside and pulls all the emotional triggers.

His non-fiction collection is no less great (in places anyway). Rip Hamilton as a high schooler. And an amazing story on how a trick play cost a minor-league manager his career.

miler, I agree. It starts out with a death and ends with a metaphorical one. I really enjoy the chapter on The Sluice and Where's Ben? The anthropology of a team Bowden describes is genuine and not contrived in the least.

A total winner of a book filled with bursts of conspicuous brilliance.

Based solely on the recommendation of this board, I bought Absolutely American and just finished it yesterday. Out-freaking-standing! That was an incredible book, and as a veteran myself, I felt even closer to the characters. I highly recommend this book if you haven't read it.

The rants in this book are priceless and bouillon cubes of bad movie esoterica. Very smooth writer with a great voice for humor, he could write figure eights around people like Simmons. Nelson goes off on everything from Van Damme to the Baldwin brothers to why he hates movies that contain the word "Fool."

And he, too, thinks Road House is the single greatest movie ever made because it totally knows it's shit and yet transcends it.

  12. Just finished a great book called Everything Bad Is Good For You.  It's a quick read (well, the first half anyway) about how pop culture tends to produce product that requires higher intelligence to understand/enjoy.  It gets a bit swamped in academics in the second half but is still a worthwhile and interesting read.
