I am Charlotte Simmons was fantastic.

But Smasher would think that, too, is ponderous and overwritten.

 

I must check this out. I just finished Jarhead and was letdown. Generation Kill sounds more like what I was expecting from Jarhead.

 

Well, you're being an especially presumptuous twit today. I offered an opinion on one book I happened to dislike intensely for reasons I listed. As someone said, opinions vary.

For you to attempt to turn that into a dismissive, "Oh, he hates everything" is dead wrong and arrogant.

I've always wanted to get in a throwdown in a library.

It does start slowly but picks up pretty quickly once they get out of the Shire -- if you like that sort of thing.

 

I remember the two-part piece in Rolling Stone a year and a half ago that was the precursor the the book. Great stuff. Thanks for reminding me of the book.

I'm partial to Wright's Black Boy (make sure to get the version with American Hunger, which was initially censored by the publisher because it goes into Wright's flirtation with the Communist Party). Great autobiography.

Because I've always been inrigued by the Arctic (Greenland in particular), I recently picked up "This Cold Heaven" by Gretel Ehrlich, about her years traveling Greenland mixed in with a retrospective of its history. So far, so good. I'm a sucker for creative nonfiction.

For fiction, giving Carl Hiaasen a shot, starting with "Tourist Season." I think that if you're Floridian, you have to read Hiaasen. It's in the state Constitution or something.
