In Cold Blood is still the best true crime book -- and one of the best, period -- that I've ever read.

    Just wanted to fix that.

And while we're here, Bubba Fett, I just wanted to make it clear: No disintegrations.

I read a great one by Mitch Albom. It was about two guys who went to a basketball game. I believe it was based upon a short story of the fiction variety.

I'm about to dig into some Lardner. I just love everything I've read by the man. Any suggestions for a starting point?

farbecker, my wife and stepmom are getting joan didion's new book 'the year of magical thinking.' it's received critical acclaim and done well in sales. it's on the new york times' top five non-fiction books of 2005 list.
    in short from the times:
    here is one review:
    http://www.nytimes.com/2005/10/09/b...tml?ex=1133586000&en=3c54e8b8fe858af7&ei=5070

also, my stepmom, a teacher, is getting 'talk to the hand' a follow-up from the woman who wrote 'eats, shoots and leaves.'

heinekenman, i don't know what you've read of lardner, but i frequently pull out any short story book of his and just pick a story - even if i've read it before. 'alibi ike' is one of my favorite lardner stories. it's about a pro baseball player who has the craziest excuses for everything he does - good and bad. funny stuff.

    Mr R,

Mrs Miler knows how much I look forward to the list--each year I try to work through it. Surprised by a couple of entries (Prep ... one the little 880s is reading it, looks just like a teen novel) and omissions (Conspiracy of Fools) ... de Kooning I could care less ... the George Packer I picked up before the list came out, on the basis of the NYT review a couple of weeks back and also on his Blood of The Liberals, sort of an update (more sympathetic to conservative values or at least a forensic examination of the same) of Common Ground by Lukas (which features a guest appearance by arguably the worst first-rounder in Dallas Cowboy history, but I digress).

    YHS, etc

Hiney, try "Gullible's Travels" and "How to Write Short Stories."

If you're into Lardner, Dorothy Parker is a nice offramp. Her deliciously vicious book reviews are incomparable.

In need of a good book to relax with during finals week preparation/finals week. Light hearted, funny, nothing serious. Message me your suggestions please. Don't have time to go through 30 pages to look for something.

    Mr H-man,

I have a rare Lardner (first ed.) worth tracking down if you can:

The Story of a Wonder Man. His autobiography. I don't know if it's out there at all and I'd never had a price attached to it. (From what I can tell old Lardner and Runyon stuff hasn't shot up in value; it's just hard to find some titles.)

    YHS, etc

I'm currently reading "Star Wars: Labyrinth of Evil," which is touted as "the must-read prequel to Episode III."

Read that, and I was hooked. I think they're setting up this Skywalker kid to be evil later, but I could be wrong.
