Boston Herald columnist Steve Buckley: "I'm gay."

Don't even mention Dennis and Callahan. Just hope Dennis doesn't start drunk-dialing him, too (but if he does, hopefully Buck tapes and posts it).

  2. Good for Buckley. It should be a weight off his shoulders. Now he can be who he really is and not have to worry about someone outing him. Still doesn't mean I'll read his stuff.

I wouldn't worry about the people at WEEI - most of that is an act. I am curious if 98.5 makes any veiled cracks at his expense - kinda of a "you are gay if you listen to EEI" shots.

Still doesn't mean I'll waste my time on either WEEI or 98.5.

The bigger question is whether this will allow another Boston media personality to come out (not that it is much of a secret).

Thanks Chris. Now I'm playing a guessing game in my head.

    Doubt he will.

The Redskins, during the Lombardi year, were "rumored" to have a player who was gay and the team knew and Lombardi wasn't real happy with the whole thing. Can't think of his name for the life of me -- at least one other prominent Redskin was rumored to be gay and another former Redskin was outed after his playing days.

Current players in the major sports? Can't think of any.

As gay family members and friends and some gay members here have pointed out, being gay is not a choice. But coming out must be such a wrenching decision to deal with, so many pros and cons either side. No idea how I'd handle that, whether I'd be strong enough.

As someone noted earlier in the thread, won't it be great when we get to the point that it doesn't merit a word? Wonder if any of us will live to see that day.

Does it really matter? If you like Steve as a person or his work, you will continue to do so. As far as another Boston personality coming out, I think there are much more important things to worry about.

Moddy, the guy you are thinking about is Jerry Smith. He was a tight end.

The second Redskin was probably Dave Kopay, a journeyman running back. He wrote a book after he retired in which he talks about a relationship with a teammate, and IIRC identified Smith as the teammate after he died.

Nope, Jerry Smith died, I believe of AIDS. He was the outed after playing days guy, though it wasn't much of a secret.
The Lombardi year guy was black, a fairly high draft choice if memory serves and he never panned out. Word was the environment was so miserable he never really had a chance to succeed there.

A former Washington Senators pitcher was rumored to be gay as well, and I think he may have come out not long after he finished playing.

Good on Buck. He's polarizing, to be sure, but also a really good guy. Here's hoping he's at peace.

Ed Cross, a running back from Arkansas AM&N, now The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff, might be the player you are thinking about.

Nope. I'd know if I heard it - a lineman or LB maybe? Ray something?

Guys wouldn't shower with him, Lombardi used to just blast him *** it was supposedly very ugly and I'm curious how that scene would have played out in 2010 rather than 1970 (or whatever year Lombardi was there).
