Murder victim was just a likable person, who got along with everybody:

“I raised him when he was younger after his father passed,” Gross said. “I took him under my wing, he was over my house every weekend and I was like his dad.”

Gross said Ross enjoyed rapping and dancing, even though he was not a good dancer when he was younger.

I mean, sure he had attempted murder and drug conspiracy convictions:

However, court records indicate Ross was sentenced to 10 years in prison for a 2000 attempted murder conviction and six years in prison for a 2007 drug conspiracy conviction.

Great idea! So glad they decided to do this before the "traditional summer surge of gang violence":

Gov. Pat Quinn has offered to free up 40 more state troopers over the next 30 days to serve fugitive warrants in Chicago, get known criminals off the street and combat the traditional summer surge of gang violence, Mayor Rahm Emanuel said Wednesday.

Emanuel accepted and applauded the governor’s offer after meeting with civic, religious and community leaders at Kennedy-King College about ways to combat gang violence.

“The governor made an offer. We worked through the issues of what we think would be the most helpful. And I can’t [thank him] enough. When I brought it to the governor, he quickly turned around and said, 'Yes. We’re in.’ They’re gonna give us 40 state troopers, work over the next 30 days, evaluate its effectiveness," Emanuel said.

You only cover our parade when there's a shooting:

Bud Billiken Parade organizers on Sunday bemoaned local media focus on the shooting of two teenagers at the event instead of the celebration.

“It’s a shame to waste that time on a minor incident that occurred,” parade organizer Beverly Reed-Scott said at a news conference Sunday afternoon at the corner of 42nd Street and Martin Luther King Drive.

The parade, an end-of-summer celebration sponsored by Chicago Defender Charities, saw its first shooting Saturday in its 85-year history.

An 18-year-old man and a 17-year-old boy were shot while standing in the 4200 block of South King Drive along the parade route. Both victims survived and at least one was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting.

“I am deeply disturbed and saddened by the first shooting ever to occur during the Bud Billiken parade, that is negatively impacting a great tradition in the Bronzeville community,” Ald. Pat Dowell (3rd) said in a statement Sunday. “After a thoughtful review, I look forward to discussing how we can confront the violence that is gripping our community and ensure the future of the Bud Billiken parade.”

Asked if she thought the media not covering violence would make a difference, Reed-Scott said: “Absolutely.”

Martrell Ross was killed earlier this month outside a River North nightclub after leaning against a car that wasn’t his, according to prosecutors.
