I'm going to quote Michael again here ...

    Think about that, would you?

Don't see anything approaching "fuck off" in there. All it really says is that the Falcons robbed the bank before the Braves could.

And color me skeptical on hizzoner's plans for the land too. They've had almost 20 years to come up with a plan for the area around the park and haven't done shit. NOW they're going to get serious about it? Um, ok...

The Braves are probably the all-time champions of leveraging free stadiums out of municipalities.

When they were the Boston Braves in 1952 they got Milwaukee to build County Stadium for them.

Then in 1963-65 the Milwaukee Braves got Atlanta to build Fulton County. (Fun Fact: Bud Selig was among the Braves ownership group at the time.)

Then Olympic/Turner in 1996. And here we go again.

Wonder whose turn it will be in 2023??

Yeah, I thought the same thing. Sounds like the mayor wanted to keep the Braves in Atlanta proper, but realizes the die has been cast and is trying to put a good face on it.

He was just re-elected last week, by the way. At least the Braves did him the courtesy of making the announcement AFTER election day.

One of these things is not like the others, one of these things just doesn't belong ...

The area around Turner Field would have no need to be revitalized.
And thusly turn into an even worse crime district.
The stadium was the only saving grace for that whole area.

You mean the stadium that was built and retrofitted for baseball entirely with Olympic sponsorship and TV money?

OK, what other reasons would he have for not wanting rail out to Cobb County?

Come on, guys, the Braves just need to get with the times. The Spice Girls. The Macarena. Dial-up Internet. Turner Field is so 1997.

Doc, this sentiment isn't exactly new, nor was it invented at SJ.

People have opposed mass transit extensions since the beginning of mass transit. The reason in an overwhelming majority of cases is "to keep the riff raff out."

I'm well aware of the other reasons, like the ones given in DC in opposition of a Georgetown Metro stop. They're all cursory.

I have little patience with the assertion that since: 1) light rail/subway projects are always a good idea; then 2) opposition to them must be grounded in racial animus.

It's not always racial. "They" don't want the poor white people there, either.
