The company thing is touched on in the first season, though not in any great amount of detail that I recall.

Walt, Elliot and Gretchen were buds in grad school and started Gray Matter. Walt had a thing for Gretchen. Gretchen (I can't recall whether she actually cheated on him or the relationship just went sour, unimagineable given what a peach Walter White is :p) hooked up with Elliot. Walt quit Gray Matter in a fit of pique.

At some point after that he got some job at a laboratory and hooked up with Skyler. I don't think he started teaching high school until after Walter Jr. came into the picture, though I don't think they really got into what landed him in public school drudgery.

"In an ordinary drama, this would be true: causing a child’s death is still the rare TV taboo, at least for those characters whose cause we are meant to be invested in. But “Breaking Bad” has always put children in danger, to the point that it’s practically the show’s trademark."

  3. She wasn't. Walt lost more than just money in that deal. He lost his girl, too.

There was an episode last season where it's mentioned that he had just left that company before he and Skyler bought the current house.

I know this is going back a few seasons, but I was under the impression that happened pretty early on during the building of the other company...

Of topic a bit, but does anyone know Walt's body count? I was talking to a friend about it, and we had 11, not including the 50th worst air disaster in history.

Let's see if I can do this without checking. Probably not.

Just trying to remember the people Walt did personally. Collatoral damage like the airplane crash would tick this up considerably.

The 2 dealers from the pilot. 1 gassed in the RV, the Krazy 8's strangulation in Jesse's basement.

    I'd definitely count Jane. That's 3.

The 2 bangers Walt mowed down with the Aztek. 5.

Gus, of course, and his hired tough (Tyrus, idk). I wonder if Tio Salamanca should technically be a suicide. Eh, it was Walt's plan and his bomb. 8.

The two Gus Minions in the super lab when he and Jesse torched it. 10.

Gale was technically Jesse's corpse and I'm trying to avoid counting deaths Walt didn't actively do with his own bare hands/car, but I am making an exception for him.

    I also get 11.

ETA: I wonder what Jesse's is. Considerably smaller, but he gets shared credit for a few of Walt's kills, so 5 or so?

Does he kill anyone when he blows up Tuco's headquarters with the mercury fulminate?

Ha. We negotiated a great deal and we're switching to DirecTV. Installation is Sunday, just in time for Breaking Bad. Niiiice.

This is what's so tricky about it. There are so many cross-deaths it's hard to determine. If you wanted to count the air crash, then it ups it by about 100 or so (can't remember the total). Gale was techinally Jesse, but Walt gave him the address, so I consider it a double kill.
Tio's death too, but Walt strapped the bomb to him so I give Walt credit. I feel like I'm missing one or two, but not sure. I had the exact people J-School did.
As for Jesse, I got two. Gale and the dude from Don Eladio's crew.

@ Steak - No he didn't. Just messed them up real bad.

Here's a comprehensive list of all the deaths on Breaking Bad. It even assigns credit/blame:

Thanks for the link. Season 2 saw some people go down, literally.
