I'm not going to answer for rich, but I am intrigued.

Could the federal government directly legislate for gay marriage even if it wanted to? Of course it's a states issue until the Supreme Court handles it.

Here's a political rule often overlooked. When they count the votes, they don't count how the voters felt when they cast them. It doesn't matter if people who were going to vote for Obama/Romney anyway get more enthusiastic about doing so. Obama's statement is influential only to the extent it changes votes. It won't change many, and I expect it'll be a wash.
I'm with YF and Mizzou here. They're not going to vote for Obama, probably, but they approve of this because it was the right thing to do. Judge Obama on the merits of this call, not the politics.
There were people who called the Emancipation Proclamation bullshit, too. It was a half-measure, one made out of the coldest political and even military considerations. Somehow, Lincoln's rep has survived the criticism.

Michael - you didn't just compare Obama to Lincoln did you? You may want to cut back on the Kool-aid

I think a part of this was this:

I like Obama, but I think most would agree he has a pretty big ego. As do most guys who run for president. Inevitably, when gay marriage is legal everywhere, and it will be, he will want history to look back at his backing it as a catalyst for the movement.

    I can't decide if Mark2010 is a polygamist or a neo-Nazi.

Based on the precedent he's setting with the auto bailout, Romney is going to figure out a way to take credit for it too.

I'm not comparing Obama to Lincoln, just picking an extreme example to show that in a democracy, progress usually occurs in half-measures instituted for a mixture of idealistic and extremely crass political motives.
