Honest question... Do you think Romney would actually do anything to try to get rid of civil unions?

Big language/meaning/usage day on the board.

Part of the problem it seems to me, is that "marriage" sounds/seems/reads like a religious designation.

Whereas "civil union" - even if entirely equivalent in the rights conveyed - sounds/seems/reads like only a matter of state contract law.

I think, ultimately, this is why the staunchly pro-same sex marriage folks keep getting surprised in state after state when this issue gets on the ballot. Ultimately the pro-same sex marriage side wants these unions to be considered, by both law and culture, as identical to one man-one woman marriages. And while it may be the case that this happens one day, by and large the electorate is nowhere near ready to take such a step.

It's one thing when a gay marriage issue gets crushed in North Carolina, it's another when it can't pass in California.

It would be interesting to see how many states would pass it if it went on the ballot in all 50 states at the same time with the president's endorsement.

How different would the results be if the law on the ballot said, "civil unions conferring all of the rights to marriage."

Closer vote? I bet it would be, as silly and formalistic as that may be.

The New Yorker cover was far more original and clever than the Newsweek cover.

You could have posted that at any time in the past 50 years and been accurate.

I swear I'm gonna learn my lesson about "debating" lowest common denominator folks on here, but I just have to ask: Where, other than in your fantasies, did this happen? Please specify.

BTW, recently read the piece featuring the Obama letters back and forth with the former girlfriend in NY. His nuanced take on "The Waste Land" presumably was achieved without the use of a Teleprompter. But I'm sure you have evidence to the contrary.

I don't think it's as silly and formalistic as it sounds, and I think the results would be substantially different.

As an aside, I am astounded that pro-leaning legal types haven't put together packets of contracts that a same-sex couple signs when making a marital commitment. Would seem to be reasonably straightforward for most couples, since most couples (hetero or homo) don't have much when they start out. Those contracts could be customized to any state.

Ah, the TelePrompTer meme. It's like 2008 all over again.

(Pssst, anybody heard the GOP hopefuls speak without one? They aren't as polished without either - Michigan where the trees are just the right height!)

How aren't the trees in Michigan the right height? They're perfect.

Besides, the Teleprompter line was brought up by Az to mock Zag's argument.

Reply 526 contained the first moronic mention of the TelePrompTer. It wasn't made by Az.
