I think they are an out for people who really don't want same-sex unions, but who can't bring it upon themselves to just say no. I can think of a guy in my church, about 60 years and a self-described conservative, who said he would have been against our church conducting gay marriages, but since the law in Illinois says civil unions, he's fine with that. There is not one bit of difference between the rights you get with a civil union (at least statewide) than you would with a marriage, but some people just can't get over gays and the m-word.

I don't think this guy is a bad person. I think for anyone over the age of 55, who got the message good and hard as a child that being gay is wronger than wrong, it's very difficult to wrestle with the idea that it's OK. In our church discussions, I was always fascinated to hear what the older members had to say. Some remember closeted friends from the 50s and were happy to see society finally opening up. Some were very anti-gay, but wrestled with their feelings because they had grandchildren coming out, and how could they reconcile disliking homosexuality and loving their grandchildren? A few said this wasn't their thing, and they weren't going to be involved, but if we were to stay true to being a church that accepts everybody, we can't say no just because we don't like something about them.

On the other hand, if you're under the age of, say, 35-40, and you're virulently anti-gay, then, yeah, I think you might be a bigot. Or gay. You should know better now.

Get a man and a woman to go down to the courthouse and ask for a civil union, instead of a marriage. If civil unions truly were equal, men and women would be allowed to have them.

Men and women are allowed to get civil unions. I had a friend get one a few month ago. Wanted to get on her boyfriend's insurance.

Wouldn't a common-law marriage (where still allowed) be a civil union?

Not really, if you're in a state that doesn't allow them. If your employer allows domestic partners on the insurance (either same sex or opposite sex/unmarried), the company must put it on the paycheck as imputed income, which you are then taxed on it. If you're married, it's just paid and you don't get the extra tax.

    Two great quotes from Jay

Three of my closest friends are black (they hate the term African-American because they aren't African) and they are all a little on the homophobic side. But they are starting to change their ways.

Actually the GOP hopefuls are of no interest to me as they all suck.

So what is your fucking point?

That the TelePrompTer meme is utterly and totally moronic.
