Quote from Joey Porter in the AP story:

“Since then, I carry myself in a different type of way,” Porter said Monday. “I respect my situation whenever I go out. I take a whole different outlook when I go out. I make sure I feel like I’m safe and if I’m not, I’m not going.”

OK, OK, let's reel this back in.
Three bags and I are clearly on opposite ends on this one but we managed to post our arguments without making it personal.
    It can be done.
I have nothing against three bags at all. I just disagree, as he does with me. Doesn't mean we have to resort to name-calling or personal insults.

Shockey and Bubbler, you both make good points, and I agree that we should find some way to make it harder to sell weapons to criminals.

But there's a hole in that argument: How do laws distinguish between me selling a weapon to my grandmother and someone who might sell it -- or use it -- illegally?

I'm sitting in a house which has, I believe, 11 guns. All but two are rifles or shotguns. One of the handguns is a .22, the other is larger but I don't recall what it is.

I say that to offer my background as a pretty pro-gun person, lest my next comment be slapped with a knee-jerk, anti-gun label.

When are we, as a country, going to accept that there are NO reasonable arguments against tightening gun control? It is absolutely unbelievable how easy it is to get a gun in this country. And the gun violence that results attests to that.

That's a good question. I have no ready answer. I think it needs to be explored.
Somehow there has to be a way. I wish I did have the answer.

How long do you think it will take Jesse Jackson to weigh in on this one?

Driving through Illinois on I-74, there are a bunch of signs put up by a pro-gun group, kind of like the old Burma Shave ads from the 40s and 50s.

    One I saw recently said:

    "Guns are neither
    Good nor evil
    How they're used
    Is up to people."

For the record, I've never owned a gun, nor wanted to own one. I only offer this as a discussion point.

It's past my bedtime, because I have an 8 a.m. class. It's back to the grind.

    Good night.

Make it illegal to sell a weapon you purchase. There's no unalienable right to sell a weapon.

Seems simple to me. The gun would have something like a vet number, and you register it when you buy it, like you would a car, and if you don't want it anymore, turn it in to an agency that would dispose of it.

If we can freaking register cars, with all of the bureaucracy out the ass that it takes to buy/sell/license one, then we sure as hell can do it with guns.

Would that totally stop illegal gun sales? No. But it, along with uniform gun laws per state, would make a big difference.

Any sales of guns outside of an approved place of business where you can register the gun by my example should be illegal, simple as that. Some of the shit we do in this country to ensure our own insecurity is just flat insane.

I know practically all of those Burma Shave signs by heart. I think some of the other farmers along I-74 have put up some of their own.

    Ah, Central Illinois entertainment.
