Stick to the legal arguments. They are a lot more sound.

Of course, this comes from somebody who believes cigarettes should be banned, though I know that isn't realistic.

For the umpteenth time, it's not guns, it's people who use guns.
I don't own one, have never fired one, but I will protect the rights of my fellow Americans to own them.
    Restrictions, yes. Background checks, yes.
But if you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will possess them.

I have no problem with a person owning a rifle or shotgun that is geared toward hunting purposes. I have no problem with a person owning a pistol for sport purposes. Beyond that, there's quite literally no argument that could ever dissuade me from the thought that a non-police officer, non-military person should own a handgun or automatic weapon.

That argument isn't supported by facts, sorry.

Just look at the murder rates in countries like Japan.

Big difference between a country that has always had supertight restrictions on weapons, and one that is only recently tightening them.

In the last year for which figures are available from the CDC, the leading cause of death among Americans age 15-24 was "unintentional injury." The second leading cause of death was homicide. Of that number, over 80% were by firearm. Of that number, roughly 65% were by handgun.

On average we lose about three times as many kids on American streets to handgun violence every year as we lose on the ground in Iraq.

The overall number of deaths by firearm in the US in 2004, according to the CDC:

    2004, United States
Firearm Deaths and Rates per 100,000
All Races, Both Sexes, All Ages
    ICD-10 Codes: W32-W34,X72-X74,X93-X95,Y22-Y24,
    Y35.0,*U01.4

Number of Deaths Population Crude Rate (per 100K) Age-Adjusted Rate (per 100K)**
    29,569 293,656,842 10.07 9.95

In case you think those numbers are inflated because of accidental death, here are the numbers for violent firearm deaths:

    2004, United States
Violence-Related Firearm Deaths and Rates per 100,000
All Races, Both Sexes, All Ages
    ICD-10 Codes: X72-X74,X93-X95,Y35.0, *U01.4

Number of Deaths Population CrudeRate Age-AdjustedRate**
    28,685 293,656,842 9.77 9.65

Fewer than a thousand of the annual firearms-related deaths in this country arise accidentally. The rest, the other 28, 000 -per year- are the result of violence. Again, roughly 65% of which are attributable to handguns.

I would think hunters and collectors and honest gun owners of every kind would be leading the national discussion about how to stem the tide of handgun violence in this country. They are not.

And whether you argue gun-control laws or personal responsibility, bad people or bad policy, that discussion is never going to move forward until we first admit that we live in one of the most violent nations on Earth.

Canada is a far better choice to compare us to as far as gun ownership goes. Canadians own lots and lots of guns, but the restrictions are fairly heavy. Relatively low gun murder rate, however.

Are people in Japan even allowed to own guns?

And if you can't distinguish between law-abiding gun owners and criminals...

They have the authority to kill a minority

Fuck that shit, cuz I ain't tha one
For a punk muthafucka with a badge and a gun
To be beatin on, and throwin in jail
We could go toe to toe in the middle of a cell

Fuckin with me cuz I'm a teenager
With a little bit of gold and a pager
Searchin my car, lookin for the product
Thinkin every nigga is sellin narcotics

Then me and Lorenzo rollin in the Benzo
    Beat tha police outta shape

And on the other hand, without a gun they can't get none
But don't let it be a black and a white one
Cuz they slam ya down to the street top
Black police showin out for the white cop

    Ice Cube will swarm
On any muthafucka in a blue uniform
Just cuz I'm from the CPT, punk police are afraid of me
A young nigga on a warpath
And when I'm finished, it's gonna be a bloodbath
    Of cops, dyin in LA

Frankly, I don't care whether someone is a law-abiding gun owner is a criminal. What is the law-abiding gun owner missing out on if we take away his gun? The thrill of shooting an animal? Sorry, that doesn't cut it with me.

In reality, if you allow "law abiding citizens" to have guns, you simply can't control them.

The truth is, I'd really love the right to snort some cocaine. I'm a responsible person, I'm not an addict, and I promise I'd only do it every now and then, for recreational purposes, in the comfort of my home, with my friends. So how do you make it legal for me but illegal for others? It's not possible.
