For many people, hunting is a way of putting food on the table.

And what's with the quotes around law-abiding citizens? My guns were all legally purchased (except for the ones handed down from my grandfather). They will never be used to commit a crime. They are all locked away in a safe in a closet. Why should I lose my guns because of a criminals' actions? Why should I be punished when I've done nothing wrong?

I have no problems with background checks and waiting periods. I have no problems with a tax on pistol ammo so it's unbelievably expensive. I don't mind registering my pistols. But I do have a problem with prohibition of all guns.

    Hilarious.

Maybe in 1807. Not in 2007.

Actually it still is in poor, rural parts of the country, dumbass. Maybe you ought to leave the city once in a while and venture out.

Spend some time in rural America and you'll discover I'm right.

Hunters also donate tens of thousands of pounds of meat to charities. In some counties, without hunters, the local food banks would have to shut down.

There's the text of the Second Amendment. Notice the bolded part. That is simply not the case anymore. A well-regulated militia is not necessary to protect us from other countries or our own government. At the time the Bill of Rights was written, it was, but things have changed.
I don't think we have to necessarily take away every gun, but for people to act like the Second Amendment was handed down from God to make sure they could buy bazookas is a little silly.

    Back to Darrent Williams...

As a huge Broncos fan, this one really hurt. It's been on my mind all day. I think Shanahan's term -- "heartsick" -- was the best way to describe it.

Jeff, you're right this thread should be about Williams. Sorry for helping to derail it into a gun debate thread.

I hope the police catch the shooter(s) ASAP.

Jeff, I'm a Pats fan, but I'm with you. This really bugged me all day. I needed a few minutes to pick my jaw up off the floor and refocus after I heard.

Yeah, some people were pointing this out earlier, but as a Broncos fan, it took me about a blink to go from "fucking playoffs" to "who gives a damn about the playoffs."

Didn't know the guy, only saw him play at OSU, but it really has been on my mind all day too. This is the first time something like this has happened to anyone from a team I really cared about, and I'm surprised how much it bothered me. Terrible news.

I know it's in no way time, and I can honestly say football ramifications were about the 100th thought after hearing the news, but I really would have liked to have seen what he would have done of the next few years. I spent Sunday watching the game with a few of my friends who hate Denver, and we had a long debate about Williams quality of play. He frustrated me at times because he really got picked on. Peyton Manning tore him up, in particular and it seemed whenever the other team really got rolling, it was in front of Darrent. But it wasn't ever that he got fried for big plays and it wasn't that he often did dumb stuff -- he just suffered playing across from Champ, I think. "Football people" always seemed to rave about his upside, and after a season of riding a sort of roller coaster on my feelings toward him, I concluded yesterday by saying I was damn glad we had him, even if he did get picked on at this stage in his career.

It was a very weird, looking back. We'd never talked about him before, and spent an hour on him yesterday.

It's terrible for his family and his friends and I really have felt it hanging on me all day, so I don't mean any disrespect when I say I'll really miss him on the field too. He was a fun player to watch and he had one crazy ass hair style.

    R.I.P. Darrent.

Williams was always picked on because no one wanted to throw at Champ. But whereas that used to make me cringe, I started feeling better about his play this season and thought he was really improving. I just really enjoyed watching him play.
    Pilot, thanks for your thoughts...

Today I tailgated at the Rose Bowl, went to the game and had a good time, but Darrent kept creeping in my mind all day. It's just one of those things where you wonder if it really happened, and then when you realize it did, you wish it didn't. Make sense?

You're right about playoffs though. I was torn up, distraught about losing to the Niners yesterday. Then this happened, and I just don't care that much anymore.

For what it's worth, Williams is now in the second-most prominent box on ESPN.com. So, hi Bristol?

    Guns are the problem.

In a rage, all there needs to be is the twitch of an index finger for people to die.
