I too might have liked to see this, just to show that Obama was willing to fight. But do you really think that would have derailed the Tea Party?

In the end, the Tea Party would have gotten what it wanted anyway:

    1. The case would have gone to the Supreme Court, which would have likely ruled against Obama and he would have backed down.

    2. Scenario number 1, but with Obama not backing down, getting impeached by the House and forever tarnished, and the Tea Partiers getting to play the victim card when those evil liberal Washington elites in the Senate refuse to convict Obama.

37 years ago today Richard Nixon resigned from the Watergate scandal and Gerald Ford was sworn in at noon.

The Obama presidency makes those seem like "the good ole days."

This is an absolutely fantastic point.

This is one of the dumbest things ever posted on this message board. Just immortalizing it for you.

This is Obama's failure and he's been raked over the coals for it. The GOP threatened to filibuster during the lame duck session and Obama sent out an olive branch with the Bush tax cuts extension. Bartlett and others have opined that he should have taken the bull by the horns at that moment, getting the debt ceiling raised in return for the tax cuts. But he is so bent on being a compromiser, he gave away the house.

It's a failure as a politician more than a failure at policy. He's right that this is a centrist country and compromise is necessary to govern. He's insane if he thinks that you reach a consensus by offering the compromise off the bat. You hard line, then you meet in the middle. You don't start in the middle.

Yeah. Things are absolutely great right now. Obama's doing a bang-up job.

Agreed. Thank you, YF, for so clearly pointing out the root of the problem for the Democrats. It has been enjoyable watching you dominate this thread for the last few pages.

    I will regret responding.

But Richard Nixon broke the law, abusing the highest office in the country, and created a crisis that made the country question whether our constitution works. It was one of the lowest points in our country during my lifetime.

Whenever you (and several others) post on here, instead of the nonsensical "democrats" or "republicans" tags you babble about, it might as well be some moronic fan board where you are arguing "yankees" and "red sox," and reason doesn't matter, just rooting for some team.

I'd suggest you get some perspective, but anyone who would equate the abuses and criminality of Richard Nixon, with even the most feckless president (and Obama is no more feckless than George Bush was, in my opinion, even if I see them in pretty equal "politician" terms) is beyond reason.

Our greatest periods as a nation came after we opened the doors to the rest of the world.

    Great post.

If a man or woman is willing to travel across an ocean for a better life, that man probably is a strong worker and will be a positive influence on the nation and his or her community.

We just don't want the person to lazy to get up and take out the trash.

Wasn't Nixon doing a good job with the country when this went down?

IIRC, he really didn't need to do this. The country was moving forward nicely.

Good point. He was the definition of a shoo-in in 1972 even before the Dems picked McGovern.
