Mccain's as his best when he's in his FAY'A stage.

When he's looking to blow the Tea Partiers (see: 2008) is when he underperforms.

McCain beat back a Tea Party challenge a year ago and won't run again in 5 years.

Amazing what that does for your spine.

No shit, FB. McCain had a chance to be "the Maverick" on the biggest national stage -- but instead of doing it his way and picking Lieberman, he allowed himself to be handled and wound up with Caribou Dumbass.

I have tremendous admiration for the man and the personal sacrifice he made in defense of our country, and it was disappointing to see him go out with a whimper instead of a roar.

But he had his chance, and it's now past time for him to exit stage left and STFU.

McCain picked Palin because he thought she gave him the best opportunity to win. Pure and simple.

Picking Lieberman wouldn't have been courageous. It would have been suicidal.

At best, JM was temporarily dazzled by the sheer Palin bullshit factor.

At worst, he was advised by the Inside Insiders NOT to take Joe, and made a hasty, disastrous decision based on virtually-nonexistent vetting. He's admitted he only talked to her once, face to face, before finalizing his decision.

Shooting from the hip doesn't always work.

My maximum sympathy for McCain surfaces when I focus on the degree to which he was wholly screwed by the Bush/Soprano Thug Patrol in South Carolina, and was shunted from the nom in a year when he might have had a chance into a year when he really didn't, since he was stuck in the brownish trail of Fredo's multiple fumbles.

I think the economy would be better off with absolutely NO corporate income tax. The corporate income tax is wasteful in that it encourages very stupid things -- e.g., separate sets of books (one for accounting purposes, one for tax purposes), corporations investing in other corporations' preferred stock because the interest isn't taxable (to them), etc. Then there's the whole double-taxation issue -- earnings are first taxed at the corporate level, then the remainder is taxed at the individual level. Do I think that corporations would start paying more for whatever it is that they buy? No. Do I think the economy as a whole would be better off if corporate earnings were taxed only at the individual level? Yes.

    No disagreement.

The VP pick really means very little in terms of who is going to win. McCain was going to lose. Picking Lieberman would have lost him the base -- which already didn't trust him -- and would have gained no additional voters.

Palin was a Hail Mary. He didn't "cave" to the right wing or Christian conservatives. he pandered to them.

He was desperate. he gave it a shot.

And, for about a minute, it looked like it might work. She did bring a lot of energy to the campaign.

Too bad she was an empty skirt.

If Perry somehow wins the presidency, I'm nominating doctorquant to run for Governor of Texas.

If nominated I will not run, if elected I will not serve.

Nominating Palin was nothing more than a cynical ploy on McCain's part to try and grab disaffected Hillary voters while countering Obama's non-white-maleness. McCain didn't do his homework.

    Based on what?

Some of those voters may have been in play, but that wasn't why Palin was chosen. She was chosen to shore up the base.

Palin was a complete unknown when she was tapped.

Bachmann would've been savaged too, but she was better prepared for the job at least and might've helped in a few Midwestern states, if McCain was hell-bent on having a hard-right woman on the ticket.
