I think my kid likes to go so he can eat the whole time, and just pretends to like the sports part.

Could I do it? Of course ... I've already done it (or something very close to it), at least twice.

It's not nearly as liberating as you might think.

Yeah, it's not that difficult to spend money only on food for long stretches of time.

That's pretty much where I am right now, for the last four months at least. It's not nearly as hard as I thought it would be. All of our money is going to bills and food, no superfluous spending at all. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I actually spent money on myself.

Of course, it's a learned behavior, I think. Before I got married, my journalism salary got me from paycheck to paycheck, so I just got used to wearing the same clothes for years, waiting until that blockbuster movie was on satellite, etc. I literally wear shirts that are old as my oldest son (13) because I don't like spending money on clothes.

I canceled cable 20-plus years ago and never went back.

After Christmas of 2015, I bought new gym shoes with a gift certificate from my MIL. I literally wore out those shoes until I got another gift certificate from her this past Christmas and used it to buy a new pair of shoes.

Being a runner, I do have to replace those every few months or risk injury. My dress shoes are all five years old, though. Could use a good polishing, but seem to be OK other than that.

It means a month without even hitting a basket of balls at the range.
