I bet it's closer to 55k. That's why all these 20-somethings are covering the NFL.

 

There's no way in hell she is making $70K. Even $55K would be a little surprising. The Observer is a McClatchy paper, and McClatchy has been cutting jobs aggressively and is in full-on survival mode.

 

Is it correct she has been at The Observer for about three years? That would be a factor in her salary. Where did she go to college? If she went to Northwestern, that would likely figure into her salary.

 

Don't know anyone in that area so just guessing by comparing to other cities. Who knows how accurate these sites are, but anyway

The 55k was just a guess, then after saying 70k did a search and those 2 sites came up. For NY, Phila, DC or Boston I'd definitely say higher than 70k, but for Charlotte wouldn't think so.

But I've worked at a handful of big publications over the years and alongside some of the best -- names you'd know. Most of them weren't on an NFL beat two years out of college, so I have to chuckle when I tead about the year-long slog she went through to get the job she now has. It often takes a ton of talent and at least a few years of grinding after college.
