Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought the Observer lost its NASCAR person. That would mean the entire staff is two Panthers reporters, one Hornets, and one preps with a columnist. They get college stuff from other papers in chain.

I challenge all of you to speak to your non journalist friends about the much beloved (by the suits) Twitter. I'd venture to say "most" people, a majority, have nothing to do with Twitter. Hollywood (I include the Prez as hollywood) latched onto it cause the stars are bored and the rest is history. Suits at news organizations decided to use it to break news which is one, huge LOL. Another reason for the demise of newspapers. Latching onto other companies in an attempt to ... an attempt to do what exactly? Except ultimately lay off more people as using Twitter is ridiculous in terms of a business practice.

Most of my nonjournalist friends have nothing to do with the newspaper, either.

Their previous NASCAR guy took a buyout in March. New guy is Brendan Marks.

No. Triangle coverage comes from Raleigh. UNC-Charlotte coverage handled by freelancers/interns.

Their web site shows an SE, Deputy SE and online sports producer, then a columnist, Hornets writer, 2 Panthers writers and a preps person.

That's just twice the staff size of the 12k daily I was at (10 years ago). Yikes.

I'm telling you, these sports editor types need to be worried. They are going to be shown the door soon when the suits decide their big salaries have to go. These guys sit in the office and boss people around. If they all do keep two sports editors then they will be firing more beat guys and hiring stringers or maybe contracting out during the seasons. Pay a guy 25,000 to 30,000 bucks for a six month season with no travel. Somebody would do it. Maybe all recent college grads, kind of like the MLB.com college kids.

There are no more beats in the entire newspaper? The only beats are in sports?

Remember the situation from two years ago in Minnesota? The female beat reporter ended up being reassigned....and she's been a travel and features reporter. Wouldn't shock me if something like that happened here.
