Oh, there are a handful of beats outside of sports. But I doubt anyone on those beats is hankering to be a Panthers back-up writer.

One of our interns over the summer. I was very impressed with his work. Need to do a better job of keeping up with him there.

As for the remark about sports editors - everyone should be worried. At my last sports editor job, I had a very nice office to sit in and boss people around. It might have been bigger than my first apartment. I also had minimal staff, so I had to get out and cover stuff. A lot of stuff. Wrote so much in 2013 that I was voted D.C. sports writer of the year, which I couldn't have done just sitting in that office bossing people around. Everyone is stretched thin and I can't imagine there isn't a sports editor (or writer or desk/producer type) who doesn't stay pretty damn busy.

To that end, a few months back I called a sports editor friend of mine at a big paper in a big city. A kid who worked for me was moving out there and I was pushing for a part-time job for him. They'd just laid off all their clerks. Who, I said, is answering the phones and taking the scores? Me, the SE said. I guess he did the sitting in his office and bossing people around between calls.

Holy smokes. I'm trying to picture that at the big-city paper where I worked, the SE taking scores. He'd probably prefer jumping out the window of his big office.

I can't speak for my friend but I can guess he feels the same way some days.

I was being sarcastic, but sarcasm doesn't go over well here anymore, it seems. One of the reasons I rarely visit or post anymore.

You should come around more. Then you'd know what the blue font is for.

I know this is off topic, but what do they do for the Hurricanes and the Triple-A baseball team? I don't see anything other than a photo gallery on the Hurricanes on their site.

Not sure the Charlotte paper cares much about the Hurricanes. Would assume they'd just take the N&O's coverage.

Good call. And judging by the attendance numbers, I'm not sure anyone cares about the Hurricanes, amirite?

All I know is that whenever we go to Raleigh to see the Caps play, it's probably 65-35 Caps fans. That may be generous.

They just rehired the former NASCAR guy who took the buyout ... he's now doing UNC Charlotte football/basketball, Davidson basketball and looks like he's back doing Panthers stuff again ...
