You don’t think answering questions at press conferences is part of their jobs?

Can’t really force a guy to answer questions if he doesn’t want to. Other than that, it probably depends on how much your team values your services. A guy like Eddie Murray didn’t have to say a word, a marginal player might have to entertain you every day.

Eddie Murray wouldn't get away with that today. Times have changed. An athlete's responsibilities most definitely include sucking it up and pretending to act like a decent human being for a few minutes every now and then. Do you not believe the media should be treated with dignity?

No they don’t. Ask Barry Bonds. Eddie Murray was the best switch hitters of his era and the leader of the Orioles. Do you think talking to the media was going to keep him from getting a contract? Or that it would now? If anything, players have more freedom not to talk than ever.

So reporters don't have to be treated like people first?

I remember the days when Murray, Steve Carlton, George Hendrick among others didn't speak to the media. I'm told all three weren't assholes or bad people in any way. They just didn't talk. Probably some others I'm missing.

Are there any current athletes that have an "I don't talk" policy? There has to be someone, right? Or maybe not?

And yes, reporters should be treated like people. It ain't that hard to show a little human decency.

Lynch tries to say as little as possible, but he also gets fined, given that it's part of his job.

I remember Steve McMichael not talking. And being a complete asshole about it.

Saw him in the locker room after a December game in Soldier Field, naked and hair all strewn over his face, walk toward the shower area and a young female TV reporter not see him and get in his way. She noticed him when he bellowed "Get the fuck out of my way!" at the top of his lungs, right in her face.

Also, Newton very much is obligated to meet the media regularly. If he wants to be a douchy little twat about it, that's his choice.

That’s silly thinking. Or else what exactly? He’s obligated to do whatever the fuck he pleases. If there’s some stupid fine in the NFL, so what?

    It's obviously slavelike treatment.

The fine obviously means something to him, or else he wouldn't do it.

Some of the takes, stretches and assumptions made on this thread have made it very entertaining, and slightly surreal, reading.
