Athletes don't need me or anyone else to "give them cover" because they command so much value with their playing skill that many (correctly) feel that they don't really need to play along with the press conference nonsense to have a successful career and don't share your feeling that they should gladly put up with it out of some sense of obligation to the industry or the media. And for the record, I have no issue whatsoever with Cam Newton blowing off that question and walking out. I was amused by it.

I think you should have to be an academic all-American, take etiquette classes and maybe serve a couple years in a seminary to be a football player. The games may suck but boy those press conferences would be professional.
