    This is a strange conversation.

Your outrage at that awful man for having the audacity to walk out of a silly press conference at which nothing important was going to be uttered is noted.

And I’m not ok or not ok with what Newton did. I'm basically a disinterested observer, sort of like reporters should be. I was, however, mildly amused by it and I’m even more amused by all the faux outrage about it.

    To recap:

    1) Is someone being unprofessional by refusing to provide answers in a news conference? Sometimes, but not always.

    2) Is someone an asshole by refusing to provide answers in a news conference? Sometimes, but not always.

    3) Does the media have a right to answers in a news conference? No, and a lot of media forget that.

    4) Does the public care whether the media is treated with respect? No sirree, Bob.

    5) Is Cam Newton a rocket scientist? No, he failed to declare a major.

    6) Do children have a place alongside their athlete parents in a news conference? If the athlete deems it so, you don't get to kick 'em out. Sorry.

    7) Should it be a point of consternation whether the subject addresses you with respect? No. You can write your story either way. Honest.

    8) Do I care whether you got a sound bite or a tweet out of that news conference? Exaggerated eye roll. Next question. Don't make me walk out of here.

    9) Who has provided the most correct answers in the past 10 pages? That would be cranberry.

    10) Did we have trouble with the semantics of this basic question? Hoo, boy, did we.

BONUS RANT: Athletes did not become the best at their speciality by having magic pixie dust sprinkled over them at birth. So how about we stop acting like they "tripped" into the greatest job in the world.

I think reporters sometimes forget the facts in their obsessive effort to get the facts.

And how about we stop acting as if they didn't hit every number and the Bonus Ball on their genetic lottery ticket? I don't doubt that Cam Newton's time sheet shows countless thousands of hours of directed toil. A tablespoon less of your magic pixie dust at birth, however, and he could have put in all those hours AND THEN SOME and he'd still be just a guy.

The effort is quite far from obsessive.

Come on, man. You're only allowed to point out how lucky a guy is when he was born into a rich, white family.

Well shit, that’s a given. The day I was born, the doctor told my father, “Congratulations! It’s a white boy, so his future success is assured!” My father always said that day’s ride to his second job was the happiest he’d ever had.

That's a very good parody of what people think white privilege means. Well done!
