Exactly the point. How should he have handled it if he didn't think she knew football? Is it his duty to sports journalism that he be truthful or tell you what you'd like to hear?

He should have been truthful. We can agree on that. My point was he could have turned the situation into a win. We can disagree on how easily it could have been turned into a win, but he should sneer at women all he likes if that reflects his general attitude.

So it was a pr issue. I agree. It didn't serve him well.

I honestly thought she stumbled over a couple words and "truck stick" was just what came out.

Do we even know what the tweet was?

Meanwhile, check the link I posted earlier. Not only a good takedown of Cam, but a good explanation of how much work the reporter did to earn an NFL beat.

Wasn't the tweet she is in trouble for a manual RT of a rap lyric? Like before Twitter had it's current RT function? Again, old man in me is confused.

This. There's a decent chance he'd have gotten away with something that looks like he's bagging on reporters (which is all the rage these days). But I'm sure someone would have said "reporters" was code for "women," and we might be in a similar situation.

The whole situation is so exhausting. Cam should have just owned up to it in the moment and everyone could have moved on.

    Twitter ensnares another journalist.

She's 25 and was on an NFL beat two years after graduating from college. Yeah, hell of a slog there.

Think the columnist was overselling that one.

More on the Twitter stuff that had her apologizing:

Reporter who was target of Cam Newton's sexist comment apologizes for racist tweets

Saw in there how some people are calling for her to be fired, as if that's tit-for-tat with Newton losing a yogurt endorsement. Maybe let's acknowledge that people can and do make mistakes, and it doesn't define the entirety of their being. If we can't do that, then we need to eradicate the whole concept of apologizing.

The reporter's righteous indignation is a really bad look in light of those tweets, though.
