Can we talk about Imus like adults?

  1. This coming from the person who said a few pages back: And why the fuck does Al Roker have a comment -- on anything? He is an irrelevent douche and I hope he's involved in a drunk driving accident.

    Now that's classy.

So, what exactly, was Rutgers supposed to do with the hundreds of media requests they got because of this incident? Hold individual interviews so some of you wouldn't think it was "staged?" Decline all TV requests? Most sports information departments I know prefer a press conference so that all requests are to be taken care of at once. You all forget that this turned into a major news story and I don't see how they could have avoided this. The No. 1 question everyone wanted to know -- including many of you likely now ripping them for saying anything -- was how the Rutgers players felt about this. If they no-comment their way out of it, it continues to linger and the media will continue to hound them. They dealt with it and now it's done.

Also keep in mind that considering this is the first time most of America had even heard of the Rutgers program, they probably felt like they should do a bit more explaining about their program. Again, we're all real brilliant sitting here as spectators, but I'm not sure any of us could come up with the perfect press response to this situation.

Do I think C Viv kept in mind recruits were watching? Of course. But that doesn't make her an opportunist any more than the next coach. Any coach knows whenever they are before a camera, recruits are watching. That's not exactly shocking.

Again, our cynicism is showing. We're used to being in front of cameras, of dealing with thorny media situations, to being attacked. We think everybody should just "get over it" or "move on" or "let it blow over." We think everybody has ulterior motives and nobody is genuine. C Viv's class and her leadership are regarded highly by most coaches (except apparently the ones JW knows) and I just have a hard time believing C Viv was sitting around dreaming of ways to keep this going.

I also have a hard time believing that any of them are reveling in the fact that from here on out, whenever someone brings up Rutgers women's basketball, people will say/think: "Oh that's the program Imus called a bunch of nappy-headed hos."

I'm totally with spnited and Fenian on this one.

As for Whitlock taking a shot at Stringer saying she "rambled on"... Hello? That's how Vivian is. It's part of her personality. If you spent any time around the women's game, you'd know that. Ask her about shoe shopping in Manhattan, she'll give you a 30-minute answer.

During these scandals, we have a weird way of eventually turning on the victims. They become the bad guys because they're "milking it."

I don't think they are, but so what if they are? They got unjustly trashed. They deserve to do whatever they want with the scandal.

I hope Mr. Gordon takes a similar stand on any CBS radio station and CBS employee that broadcasts misogynistic or racial songs

So you're equating a shockjock calling them a name with being raped?

I pretty much agree with all of this. C. Viv isn’t perfect by any means, but most coaches I know like her enough. Regardless, no one deserves to have things like that said about him (EDIT: or her). I think it’s awful that Sharpton has once again used this situation to make the story about him (and his daughter … didn’t know she played hoops for Rutgers … what the fuck?), and tv people love trotting him out there because his stupid, ignorant, contradictory, hypocrital ass makes good tv if nothing else. It’s awful that so many things that shouldn’t be the story have become the story here.

Rutgers — the story — had to say something. And with all of those requests, a big presser was probably the only legitimate option for them. Not even Tennessee or UConn would be ready to handle a shitstorm like that.

I think the rap music angle has been overplayed, but also, anyone who still owns any CD they paid for with maliciously misogynistic lyrics is a hypocrite at best and should not say a word about Imus. You are every bit the problem he is, and you are no better than him.

    No.

I'm equating your reaction with Knight's: They should just shut up and get over it.

Vivian will talk forever about anything. All day. Anyone who expects anything different hasn’t interviewed her.

BTE, not really analogous. NOBODY disputes that Imus' comment was offensive, ignorant and insanely stupid, and Imus has already been punished with a stiff suspension, major humiliation, and career damage.

So is it really unreasonable to wonder just how many more grandstanding press conferences are warranted by one dumbshit comment by a dumbass glorified DJ in an idiotically lame attempt to be funny on a dumbshit radio show? Or how much longer that should remain a lead national story? Or to observe that certain people (including Stringer) do seem somewhat intent on dragging this out, milking it for all its worth, and making themselves part of the story? Frankly, I don't see someone expressing such observations or questions being at all equivalent to the batshit bleatings of Ann Coulter.
