Cancer claims Bob Jelenic, 58

Discussion in 'Journalism topics only' started by Songbird, Dec 4, 2008.

  1. I think this situation is kind of similar to when Bill Wirtz died. Steve Rosenbloom wrote a piece the day he died:

I thought it was fair enough, pretty well handled. Some people in the comments felt he should've waited until he was buried, but most were happy it was written.

    Who?
We get more members every day. Site still growing. What people have run away in the past three days, never to return? They run every day, gotta be someone!

I was going to suggest BYH, Fenian and pallister...until I saw the 'never to return' part. :D

We get more sock puppets of current posters everyday.

My point, tho, wasn't really directed at you. It was more if it's ok to say good riddance Jesse Helms, it should be ok to do the same with Jelenic, who probably has directly adversely affected a lot of people on this site.

    Cool.
Your point is not invalid at all. It's good. I was not happy about the Helms stuff. But it came up earlier on this rapidly growing thread when Hitler was mentioned. That's an extreme example of course but political figures are often more polarizing and more of a public figure than this guy, who wouldn't be known outside the biz.
Still, the point remains. Let ANY body cool, at least a little!

    Onward.

As someone whose mother once had cancer, I wouldn't wish the disease on anyone.

But one thing that I do wish that happened to Jelenic is this:

As he got sicker and sicker, I wish that Jelenic, in at some point thought to himself, "Here I am, in my huge house, in my big soft bed, with my gigantic bank account, and I am dying. It's going to be all over, soon. I wish I'd spent more time being nice to the people who helped make this all possible, and not spent so much time screaming at my fellow human beings for mispelling some kid's name in a Pee-Wee hockey boxscore."

This moved on AP. It's the only mention of Jelenic in all the wire copy we've gotten today.

Cancer doesn't care what kind of life you've led, it's always going to try and whoop the ass into submission.
