Car Rental Question

The last time I rented a UHaul truck, we stopped in an empty parking lot near our destination. My wife parked the car right in front of and perpendicular to the truck (one of the largest UHaul rents). I got out of the truck to talk to her as she sat in the car.

Luckily she was paying attention and noticed that the truck had started rolling and was headed right toward the side of our car and my backside. I was able to jump in the truck and stop it before any damage was done, but there was absolutely no reason for the truck to roll. It was in park and the parking brake was engaged. The parking lot had an extremely slight slope to it.

I'm not renting UHaul again. They always end up giving me a truck way bigger than what I reserve and make me drive to some small town 40 miles away to pick it up.

Seems weird on this thread, but I've never had a problem with UHaul.

I didn't have a problem with U-Haul some months back. Yes, the vehicle's handling was worse than trying to steer a stubborn elephant, but I can be very picky like that. And they offered me $50-60 off to drive it another 35 miles and drop it off.

U-Haul sucks. Have you checked with the rent-a-truck divisions of Budget and Enterprise?

Twice I've rented trucks to move (once from NY to midwest and once local) and had great luck with Ryder.

On the NY to midwest move in 1984, my brand-new rental (less than 50 miles on it) was stolen off the street on the Saturday night before I loaded it for the Sunday move. Had to wait till their office opened on Monday, but they got me another truck Monday and never gave me a problem.

Side story: When I was at the police station to report the truck stolen, the woman in line in front of me also was reporting her rental truck stolen.

If you don't have a lot of stuff, ABF trucking is a good choice. I moved my crap from SoCal to Missouri for less than $1,300.

U-Haul not only sucks, but every time I've priced a move they've been one of the more expensive options. My best moves have been with Penske trucks, with Budget not all that far behind.

Just remember that some car rental companies require that you return it to the same location that you purchased it from. So if you are looking to move across state lines and are looking at enterprise, you will find that there is a fee associated with returning the van to a different local.

If you're moving within town, I'd suggest renting a van from Home Depot. You can make everything with a few trips and it's not as terrifying to drive and/or back down an alley. Plus I think it's like 30 or 40 dollars for the day.

Sly, his first post said he's moving across the country.

And like Zeke, I have no bad tales about U-Haul.

may u-haul rot in hell ... fuckers, every last owner/employee.

  12. Best thing about using a moving truck: setting up an impromptu living area in the truck and going to a drive in movie with friends.
