    And he didn't "win" the banana. When he went back the next day to complain, they gave him back $600 and the door prize (the banana).

    You probably earn more in interest burying it in the backyard than in a savings account. The wife and I put some insurance money in a CD last week just to park it until repairs are made, and the interest rate is less than 1 percent.

    Couple of years ago I withdrew $11,500 from a CD to make home improvements so I could get top dollar and a quick sale of my house.

    The penalty I paid for early withdrawal ($110) more than doubled the interest I had received over the past 12 months ($52).

    BofA used to penalize you by making you forfeit what interest you would have earned during your term. Now, since the interest is typically pennies or nickels, they rip out a percentage of the principal.
