I can't believe Andy is back. He's willing to critique our work. The details are at http://bleacherreport.com/users/102352-andy-auger.

He's a top writer in the industry as per Bleacher Report. Just give the kid his glory and let him see the checks from BR roll in. Oh, right, there aren't any checks coming.

Bleacher Report has "senior writers." How does that work, really, for a site that's nine minutes old? (and yes, I know it's older than that, but not by much)

Maybe the fact that he could write coherently helped as well. Just a hunch.

I had nothing to do with any of the correspondent hires. But the guy who is moving to Seattle did a lot of stringing for me at the TD and I liked him a lot. Would have hired him there if I had a spot.

Used to work with McCurdie. Nice guy, solid reporter who covered the L.A. Rams.

Ditto for Costco, Borders, Albertson's, Vons, Kohl's, McDonald's and Wal-Mart...that is, assuming that those places are hiring at all (and most of them aren't).

I've applied for things at all those places, thinking that surely I could work in them at least part-time, or on an off-hours shift, so that my freelance work could be supplemented, or else, I could do these things more steadily, easily and securely than freelance writing, while I took some classes/attempted to get training, in some other field (which I don't particularly want to do, but that, apparently, does not really matter). So far, it has been no-go for me.

Let me tell you a little story:

I recently went into Wal-Mart and bought a few things I needed. Went to the check-out stand and wanted to write a check for the stuff. I asked the spaced-out-looking cashier what the date was because, you know, not working and all, you kind of lose track of the days, and time, and I wanted to put the date on the check.

The woman looks at me, dead-eyed, stupidly and blankly, as if I was from Mars, and says, "Um, I don't know."

    That's it.

I waited, somewhat expectantly, for her to look at her machine, or a calendar, or something, or maybe yell out and ask the cashier next to her, maybe....

But, nothing...She just went right on ringing up my items, ublinking, uncaring and apathetic of a customer who was standing right in front of her, asking her a direct, and rather easy, question.

Well, after finally deciding to just make my own best guess as to the date, so that I could finish filling out my check, I walked outta there thinking, "Yeah...this person's working...and I'm not."

It's not that I'm jealous of people working at Wal-Mart just because they're working at Wal-Mart. But the principle of the situation stands, and, you know what? That woman, frankly, is doing better than me right now.

So, excuse me for being just a little bit ticked off at this whole situation.

I would just like to thank the SJ community for providing a tree of links to some really top-shelf threads from the past, which eventually explained how 'looser' came about.

And in a desperate attempt to make a sensible post on this thread, I'll leave it up to the individuals involved to judge if this was the right opportunity. I happen to know one of the people who got a gig; good people, so I'm glad.

Your writing isn't great either. Fair enough? What big gig did you land by the way?

Andy, do yourself a favor and stop posting here. Go do some work. Do some good work. Let your work speak for itself. There is no way it could be worse of an endorsement than your posts here.

Go. Do some work. Stop posting on this thread. You'll thank me one day.

Andy I write with you on B/R but I am inclined to join the majority here when they say... Just stop.

You're doing nothing but tearing yourself down, and I know you might not believe it, but these people speak the truth when they say they are very influential in sports journalism.

That being said, this is my first post on here.

I write on B/R, and I know that is neither respected nor prestigious in this circle, but please understand I write on there because I am a full time law student and B/R is the only place I can find to regularly share my opinions on sports.

Like Andy, I was also a finalist for the Seahawks correspondent position, and despite not getting the gig I was offered a Featured Columnist position for the Seattle Seahawks on B/R.

Please note: I am not bragging about this. I am aware that, in the scheme of sports journalism, the difficulty of achieving "Featured Columnist" status at B/R is minimal.

That being said, I am excited about the position, as it gives me an excuse to regularly write about the Seahawks.

I look forward to seeing more of this web site. There are obviously some very accomplished, seasoned, and mature writers here, that much I can infer from the constructive tone of conversation that is maintained in even the most heated discussions.

It is good to see a site that is dedicated to assisting those in sports journalism.

I am always open to criticism. I have always considered myself an excellent writer, but I am well aware that I still need plenty of work. Any constructive criticism, editing, or advice from anyone in this forum will be gladly accepted.

Now that I have formally introduced myself, I will yield the floor to more important subjects.

    Cheers.

    sk.

    Side Note-

Andy, this is the title of the piece you posted two hours ago:

"Seatle Seahawks Sign Ex St Louis Ram's Cornerback Travis Fisher"

It should read (others correct me if I'm wrong)

"Seattle Seahawks Sign Ex-St. Louis Rams Cornerback Travis Fisher"

Seattle was misspelled (kind of important in that piece).
Rams should not have an apostrophe in it, because their team name is not the St. Louis Ram.
Ex should be hyphenated, I believe.

That's not just your "forum writing," that is the title of a piece you published...

Sorry Andy, but if you're going to preach on here about excellent writing skills you best practice what you preach.

To the Moderator: I apologize if this is off-base, but I figured the forum would find it relevant to discussion.
