Nebraska to the world: "We're cool with 7-5 so as long as our coach isn't an asshole."

    From beavers to hot-buttered corn.

I think that was a punchline in an '80s joke.

Nebraska did in fact try to hire Bret Bielema, per Gil Brandt:

There was talk this fall of Riley's seat at Oregon State heating up. Went 5-7 this year, seven straight losses to Oregon (most of them pretty big), plus a recent 3-9 season. But he hasn't had big resources and has been able to pull off big upsets (including Arizona State this year).
I'm a little puzzled why a program like Nebraska would fire a 9-3 coach and hire a coach who was on the hot seat at Oregon State, to say nothing of Riley having no Midwest connections and his name likely not creating a big buzz among Nebraska fans.
I hope it works out well for Riley since he's a great guy, but to me it smells like a replay of Mike Price swinging for the fences with Alabama: longtime coach has some success with limited resources, hopes to end his career with one of the big names. Minus Price's drinking, of course.

That's why Scott Frost didn't make sense to me. He's done well at Oregon as an assistant, but he also has a tremendous QB in Mariota. Maybe Nebraska figures Riley can keep the seat warm while Frost gets more experience under his belt.

You spend that kind of money on a seat-warmer.

Interestingly enough, Riley could have had the Alabama job before they hired Price (he's an Alabama alum; not many people know that). Supposedly, his wife wasn't interested in moving back to the South.

TIFWIW, but the Kansas student paper is reporting that the Jayhawks have offered the job to Ohio State OC Ed Warinner, who was also Mangino's OC:

Funny you mention that. Already seeing Paul Chryst's name on Oregon State's short list.

Warinner's daughter is enrolled at Kansas. Could she be the source? I could get behind that hire, but my brother was a student manager when he was there the first time and reported directly to him. He says the "abusive" stuff Mangino was pushed out the door for, Warinner was twice as bad.
