Holtz, obviously. Please, just to get him off my TV.

And I'd be shocked if Michigan has a problem shelling out cash for the right coach.

Silly as it may sound but I've thought Mason would have been the right hire after Gill and after Weis/Bowen.

He has won at KU before and I envisioned a four-year deal where he could handpick a successor and leave a decent legacy.

Apparently the Weis contract pretty much hamstrung who they could afford to hire. They'll be paying for that loadbag for most of a decade.

OK - someone who has Big 12 knowledge/ties --- please explain this:

Bo Pelini is fired for not winning enough. They replace him with a guy who hasn't won even close to as much as he has.

And don't give me the "Oregon State is a tough job" stuff.

Riley was there what, 13 years? And he never, not once, not even by accident, figured out how to lose less than four games?

This tells me Pelini was winning enough to satisfy the brass but his abrasive, asshole approach and high maintenence attitude just rubbed too many people the wrong way so they canned him.

Nothing to add. You said it all.
You can be a dick and win, and no one cares.
Be a dick (at Nebraska) and get your lunch money taken from you, then there's the exit.

    Yep.

Pelini's a dick and the fans hated him. It's as simple as that, it seems.

Yep, Nebraska wants a coach who is at least a phony nice guy like Tom Osborne. Good luck finding a guy who is that, willing to come to Nebraska and able to contend for championships.

But I thought Solich was a nice guy and he got fired.

I think the perception within Nebraska is that the school should be a national power. So coaches who do not achieve that kind of success get fired.

But when Nebraska looks for a new coach they find out that no one outside the state share that perception. So they wind up settling for a Callahan or a Riley.

Well, once you've been a national power you always want to get back there. And neither Solich nor Pelini could win the important games. There's no reason to think Nebraska couldn't reach that level again, and along with many other programs (Miami, Texas, Oklahoma come to mind), they'll keep chasing it.

While I am sure that Nebraska will keep chasing the dream. But I think the three schools you mentioned have a much better chance of returning to the top. They all have much larger recruiting bases.

Not so sure about that. Well, there's certainly more talent in Texas and Florida, but there's also more competition for that talent. And Nebraska is still a destination school for some athletes, especially the corn-fed linemen they've been known for. If they ever get the right coach, they could come back.

Except they haven't been getting or creating those corn fed lineman for years. Nebraska's heyday was when it could take their pick of kids on the Great Plains, grey and/or redshirt them, get them on steroids and let them live in a weight room that was better than all of its rivals, then in a few of years plug them into the lineup where they didn't even have to learn to pass block, just steamroll overmatched Big 8 teams.

The days when that can be your system are long gone.
