Fair point. But I think those big, tough kids they are known for are still out there. They just haven't done a good job of finding them. And if they can still get athletes like Abdullah or Taylor Martinez, they should be able to get back. All they really need to do is figure out is how to beat the better teams on their schedule.

Word is Cutcliffe turned down Michigan.

    Wow.

Looks like Michigan is learning the same lesson Tennessee had to deal with: Their job is just not as attractive as they thought it was.

FWIW, Duke is saying there was no contact with Michigan, even from third parties.

But it's not like that hire would energize the Michigan fan base. Cutcliffe's done great where he is, but I'm not sure that's the right fit.

People keep saying Cutcliffe got screwed out of the Ole Miss job and that certainly looks like a bad move in retrospect, but the fact is he didn't recruit worth a damn after the Eli Manning class.

If only Khayat and Boone had let Cut hire Orgeron as asst. head coach/recruiting coordinator.;D

I don't think the McElwain or Riley hires have energized the fanbases in Gainesville or Lincoln, aside from being happy their predecessors are gone.

Those kinds of hires don't happen too often anymore. How many "wow" hires have there been since Saban and Meyer?

Bielema at Arkansas. Maybe Mora at UCLA.

    But you're right. It's rare.

Doesn't happen in the pros so much, either.

Bielema was "wow" because it was a strange fit and nobody seemed to know there was much interest.

I know people think he's a buffoon, but he'd also been to three straight Rose Bowls when he made the move.

More meathead than buffoon. Not a bad coach by any stretch.

    WTF??

That's a huge domino to suddenly flip over.

That's even more of a lateral move than Bielema to Arkansas.

    Could Alvarez be the problem?
