Pitt's Paul Cryst, with his Badger pedigree, immediately shoots to the top of the spec list, along with some of the players in the U-M sweepstakes like Schiano and Butch Jones.

That would certainly be a guess.

Wisconsin can afford to buy better than a .500 coach who has losses to Youngstown State, Navy and Akron in three years.

As an alum, ding ding ding ding.

I've made fun of Bielema and Karma while it lasted but, as long as Alvarez is the AD, it does bring a level of oversight that most big-time head coaches don't have to deal with. Yes, he's supportive when it comes to giving the football program everything you would ever want but if you lose on Saturday, it can lead to some inter-office guessing on Monday.

Alvarez has a 13-foot statue outside the football offices. I can't think that walking past that is always enjoyable for a head coach.

Heard this news on the radio on my way home from work (in the general Madison area). Stunning.

Not surprisingly, Darrell Bevell's name is getting a lot of play.

From a program standpoint, if they can't keep the recruiting class together, it'll be a huge setback for the Badgers. They already have a lot of depth issues.

Alvarez "Ties to Wisconsin (are) not important."

Which might point away from Chryst.

    Bevell would be THE hire.

I think he's an NFL guy all the way now. Ten years ago, he would have taken it.

Probably. But he might think the Bill O'Brien path to an NFL job is the best one.

Keep an eye on Bill Callahan. He was perhaps Alvarez's favorite all-time assistant and presumably could work for him, which appears to be the number one job requirement.

Because I'm determined to mention his name for every opening, no matter how unlikely - Bob Stitt! The inventor of the Fly Sweep to the school that perfected it!!

I'm pretty sure "ability to get along with Alvarez" will be key. I'd be quite surprised if it isn't one of his former assistants.
