I'm thinking my reference is probably from before your time at SJ.

Charlie Murphy's True Hollywood Stories were great, both Rick James and Prince.
    Definitely suffered from overexposure, though.

That's a big difference between the two shows. For significant periods of time while 'SNL' was at its best, you couldn't watch constant reruns of it.
Chapelle was in heavy rotation constantly. By midway through the second season, hearing people repeat lines was getting pretty tiresome.

The "douchebag likes it" factor was much higher with Chappelle than just about anything in our modern culture, and while that is perhaps impossible to separate emotionally from the art, I think we should try our best to do so anyway.

I've spent the last three minutes trying to remember the genesis of that and I can't do it. Help?

In some discussion of sex (can't remember the particulars) Rumple talked about how bad sex made him angry, and it became a bit of a running joke.

Ah, there it is. Thanks. Know what else hasn't been said in a while? Repped for real talk.

    And for good reason!

I preferred Season 1, partially for this reason. Season 2, with Lil Jon and Rick James and Samuel Jackson Beer, was quoted so often by so many awful people that I did what I could to avoid showing my love of the show in public. It's like talking baseball with someone who has never even heard of WAR (or, for the most part, discussing the NBA here).

If True Hollywood Stories: Rick James is your favorite sketch, you're probably not a huge fan of the show, playing the percentages.

And yes, I would rather be a judgmental snob than deal with douchehordes.

I would tweak this a bit:

If True Hollywood Stories: Rick James is one of the only sketches you can name, then you're probably not a huge fan of the show, or understand why it's so important. I think it's OK to say Rick James is your favorite sketch, just like it's OK to say "Yesterday" is your favorite Beatles song. Both are still brilliant.

I feel this way about The Wire, and it fits in with this discussion because the Grantland Bracket for best Wire character brought of up similar feelings. If you say Omar is your favorite character, it's an indication that you might view the show the way some of the Grantland guys did -- you're missing the overall point. But, Omar is still a great character. Maybe the best in the series. I'm just more likely to take you seriously if you have an appreciation for the entire story.

And seriously, Vers, quit being a stubborn mutherfucker and fucking watch The Wire.

OK, if Rick James is "Yesterday," then is Lil Jon vs. Lil Jon "Hey Jude"? It's a fine sketch/song, but it probably doesn't belong in the top 10-15 in the Chappelle's Show/Beatles catalog and is a piss-poor choice as a favorite that shows you only paid attention to the biggest hits rather than the best work.

And I'm planning to watch The Wire over the next two or three months.

Of the 7 or 8 clips I've seen, Lil Jon is one of the funnier ones. When I get around to watching a season or two that might drop down the list.

Like you, I would like to watch The Wire to see what the hubbub is about.
