Cheering in the Clemson pressbox

Here's when I stopped taking this threadjack seriously on a thread in which the context was college press boxes and their SIDs:

Stitch: Has anyone met an SID who wants cheering in the press box?
Dan Feldman: I've been in press boxes where there's plenty of cheering and nobody in charge seems to mind.
    Johnny Dangerously: Such as?
    Dan Feldman: High schools.

He's just fucking with us to fuck with us.

He has a lot of free time since the NBA isn't starting anytime soon.

I can't at all see why those who run press boxes might change their policy of making the area as conducive as possible to the media.

The more apt library comparison to what I don't think we're far from:

A librarian (SID or other press box manager) leads a group discussion in the middle of the library because he believes that's the best use of the space. A patron (many reporters) walk into the library and tells the librarian he can't talk so loudly "just because" libraries are supposed to be quiet.

I don't think you're serving readers with that policy. Can you not cover games without a seat in the press box? It would be more difficult, but why should that dictate coverage?

And your standard of when cheering in the press box is OK is based on how close a worker is to the players? If an NFL player's dad works in a press box (for the team, not as a reporter), is it acceptable for him to cheer?

Do some research on Larry Fitzgerald's dad.

I've also been in a college press box with plenty of cheering where nobody enforced the current protocol.

He's a reporter. Nothing to do with what I'm talking about.

    A BCS school?

As for an NFL player's dad working in the press box, do you know of any specific case or are your throwing crap on the wall?

As for cheering in general, the collective stance of journalists is in fact the reason why the industry is in trouble and we should be holding summits and meet ups to solve everything.

    Yes, a BCS school.

No, I don't know a specific example. But wouldn't even you agree that how well a press box worker knows the players is a silly determinant of whether it's acceptable for him to cheer in a press box.

Yes. I don't give a shit how well you know a player, you shouldn't cheer for him in a press box. It happens more in high school because, as plenty of people have said before, in general high school events aren't run as well as college and pro. It happening in a BCS box is a disgrace.

maybe we can get this topic on the apse agenda for next summer, with dan on the panel advocating why it's OK to cheer in the press box. he can bring his valuable high school press box experience with him.
Me? I'm going to the local college SID and tell him he can save the newspaper biz if he'll let people cheer in the press box.
