How is the subsidization of Tesla any different than the subsidization of farm products? They are both selling at a price that the market does not want. Subsidizing Tesla would help "Make America Great Again" because it would keep a manufacturer here in the US with high dollar jobs. Shouldn't we want to keep the manufacturing of our innovative ideas here?

Now I'm more of a free market believer, but there are benefits to Tesla in the US. Also didn't we want to foster the electric car?

Did I ever support subsidization in any other context?
Regardless, solar energy, green energy is a clusterfuck of government intervention.
I don't want to foster anything.

Was a general question, not directed specifically to you.

Bastiat would have a few things to say about that sentiment.

Are you working from some premise that ag subsidies are good?

No. Even in 80’s when I was majoring in Econ I said farm subsidies were wrong.

I think I said this in an earlier post. Don't sleep on GM when it comes to this. They have put a lot into self-driving r&d, including a few billion dollars that Softbank threw at them (the BOJ has been creating gazillions of yen out of thin air, Softbank has been out there sprinkling it around, good and bad businesses alike -- more bad than good businesses, which will come with an eventual price). Waymo is sexy. Tesla is sexy. They are also very richly valued. GM is deep value in comparison. But they have as good a chance as any of these players to develop something that eventually becomes a standard in that space. They are really putting the work in.
