Elon’s going to order Cybertrucks to become the new fleet vehicle for the USPS in the name of efficiency, right?

(Actually the Post Office using electrics would make a pretty good use case. Just not these grotesque things carved from a bar of soap.)

 

USPS should absolutely be using electric vehicles, as well as doing things like plastering their facilities with solar panels. It's a near perfect use-case for electric - Set daily routes with long charge times at night, and no need to do emergency runs. It looks like administration pressure and earmarking $3B finally cost the planned percentage up from 10% to 75% for electric for the new fleet, at least according to this article.

 

I just feel safe in knowing Elon won't make recommendations for new acquisition rules which favor the companies he owns which are government contractors.

 

The electric van produced in the town I live finished as runner up in the USPS bidding for the new fleet. They do produce the EV vehicle for Amazon. I drive by a yard filled with hundreds of EV vans every day.

 

Using alternate power sources like natural gas for fleet vehicles has been around for over 30 years.

I don't think many Post Offices in the Northeast have the space and setup for electrical chargers and solar panels. Add in the capital cost, and I don't know how USPS could swing it.

 

I think that’s probably why Amazon is in a position to buy them given their new giant warehouses all over the Midwest. A lot easier to put in EV capability than the USPS.

 

If you're parking the trucks in a parking spot, then you have space for an EV charger. Also, for a closed system like that, you can save space because you don't have to worry about accounting for the variety in vehicle sizes, like if you're trying to ChargePoint or Supercharger spot.

 

The Post Office I'm thinking of doesn't park all of its trucks in the lot. The building is small with gables and shit that couldn't support a meaningful solar panel array. So what is that place going to do? And where is the USPS coming up with money it doesn't have?
