Chevy Volt a Failure - GM to Layoff 1,300

    The government didn't save the auto industry. It bought GM.

    You're entitled to your own opinions, but you're not entitled to your own facts. And in this instance you're creating a new fact -- the certainty of an economic catastrophe -- out of your policy preferences. We can quibble over how certain/uncertain said catastrophe was (I say very unlikely, you say very likely). But even "very likely" is not the same as certain. The only thing that is certain is that the government intervened. In my estimation, that fact means that the economy was not cleansed of the mal-investments that led to the trouble in the first place. But the argument that: A) because the government acted to prevent a possible catastrophe; and B) said catastrophe didn't happen; means C) the catastrophe would have happened had the government not acted, that argument doesn't hold water.

    Can you think of any economic experts who didn't agree that we risked certain financial meltdown without intervention in the third week of September '08? Because, as I recall, there was a clear and overwhelming consensus at the time in favor of government intervention on both sides of the aisle and among the captains of industry. Did all thos guys in pinstripe suits just go socialist on us? Or do you think the threat may have been real?

    If only there was some sort of comparable historical event in which we could see whether intervention or nonintervention made more sense.

    Update: Waiing to sign the paper work on a 2012 loaded up lot. MSRP 42,5. Out the door after taxes at 39 even. 0 percent financing. Don't get the car until Monday, but I'm looking forward to it!

    Thanks for your concern .... fortunately, my wife drives just about exactly 30.1 miles per day, plenty within the Volt's electric only range.

    I know it pains you to know that there is a segment out there for whom this car perfectly fits the lifestyle.

    Here's hoping I'm as satisfied once we actually take delivery, and thanks to this thread for making me ponder whether the Volt was the right choice for us. Your mileage may vary.
