'State department foofs' isn't meant to insult or discredit anyone?

There is no logical fallacy, because even though I characterized them as foofs, I didn't do it in the absence of an actual argument. It would be an ad hominem attack, for example, if I said, "The state department doesn't know what it is doing because it is run by a bunch of foofs." And left it at that.

What I said was that we are a country that has run up $16 million in debt and they are having parties to show off how "green" they are. Take out the word "foofs," and the argument is still there.

In the absence of any facts regarding the cost or savings of the cars or the charging stations or the garden parties, and without knowing how much or even if the cars or chargers or parties contribute to that $16 trillion debt or subtract from it by their savings over time, 'foofs' is part of an ad hominem attack on the spending habits of the state department.

That is not true. Our country has been running an annual budget deficit of more than a trillion dollars. Our accumulated debt is $16 trillion. It is just a factual statement, if I say that ANY government spending contributes to those deficits and has contributed to that overall debt (it is government caused debt!) -- even without the obvious proposition that we are spending way more than necessary on Volts relative to much cheaper cars (and that doesn't include the obvious -- that GM will contribute a minimum of $25 billion to our national debt when all is said and done, which is certainly part of the backdrop behind why our government is propping up Volt sales with government contracts), and it is for for politicized reasons. But take out that proposition, if you really want to deny what is a common sense assertion, and the fact still remains that we will have a budget deficit of at least $1.3 trillion this year and any cars, chargers and parties that the State Department throws money around for is a contributor.

I, for one, am shocked to find out diplomats are entertaining guests at social gatherings at our embassies. I had imagined rows and rows of cubicles with guys in no-iron, short-sleeve dress shirts working on complex treaties and trade agreements. Especially during business hours.

It was a "Look at how green we are" party. Go to the website with the write up and click on the video of the interview with Al Gore virtually masturbating over the whole thing. If this is one of the purposes of our diplomatic missions, I'd personally say, "Move over Big Bird, you're fucking essential in comparison."

Meanwhile, we edge closer to a financial cliff every day, with another one of those ridiculous debt ceiling crises going to paralyze the country in December, which is going to send markets back into turmoil.

Well, the parties help promote American products, through the embassy US Foreign Commercial Section. Like that yellow Tesla.

Which also appeared earlier this year in Oslo.

Wonderful. You are telling me that our government is putting us in more debt to promote the hand-picked company the politicians in power gave a half a billion dollar loan to, which couldn't make a payment on the loan this quarter.

This is the role of our government -- to unfairly put us all in debt to benefit cronies?

I'd personally love a half a billion dollar loan, more money spent (which gets added to our debt) to promote my company, and in return. ... well, I can do like Tesla and not even produce anything or meet any of the promises I have made.

Isn't the idea of promotion to actually boost sales? Would Tesla only have sold 10 or 15 of those Model S cars to date, instead of 135 of them, without the state department acting as its PR firm at the expense of our national debt?

You guys should really take this to the politics thread or we will end up with a very informative thread being locked.

Justin I think it's great that you have been willing to share the details of your purchase and leave it up to SJ scrutiny. Please keep us updated. You may convince me to buy one.
